Junior Field Service Engineer – Electrical / Electronic Systems
Location: Southport, Merseyside (Workshop & Field Based)
Salary: £28,000 – £35,000 depending on experience, plus overtime, company vehicle (after training), pension and career development.

Point Safety Ltd is one of the UK's leading independent specialists in gas detection systems. We design, install, commission and maintain fixed gas detection systems for some of the UK's largest industrial companies, pharmaceutical manufacturers, laboratories, universities and manufacturing facilities.
As our business continues to grow, we are looking for an enthusiastic Trainee Field Service Engineer to join our engineering team.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with an electrical or electronic background who wants to develop specialist skills in industrial safety systems.
No previous gas detection experience is required—we will provide full training.
The Role
This is a hybrid role working both from our Southport workshop and at customer sites across the UK.
You'll work alongside experienced engineers, learning how to install, service, calibrate and commission specialist gas detection and monitoring equipment.
Typical duties include:
- Servicing fixed gas detection systems.
- Calibrating portable gas detectors and environmental monitoring equipment.
- Assisting with commissioning of new installations.
- Fault finding on electrical control systems.
- Testing detectors using calibration gases.
- Preparing service reports and calibration certificates.
- Working with customers on-site to maintain critical safety equipment.
- Supporting workshop calibration activities.
- Travelling throughout the UK with occasional overnight stays.
What We're Looking For
Essential:
- Electrical or electronic background.
- Good understanding of electrical principles.
- Ability to read basic wiring diagrams.
- Understanding of:
- Relays
- Control circuits
- 24V control systems
- 4–20mA analogue signals
- Digital inputs and outputs
- Full UK driving licence (or working towards obtaining one).
- Good communication skills.
- Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
- Able to work independently as well as part of a team.

Desirable:
- Electrical qualification (City & Guilds, NVQ, HNC/HND or equivalent).
- Experience using a multimeter.
- Knowledge of instrumentation or industrial control systems.
- Experience working in manufacturing, maintenance or electrical installation.

Working Hours & Travel
This role is based on a 40-hour working week; however, due to the nature of field service engineering, working hours are flexible rather than a standard 9–5.
Some days you may need to start early or work later to meet customer requirements, while on other days you may finish earlier. Overtime is averaged across your weekly hours to provide flexibility for both our customers and our engineering team.
The role involves regular travel throughout the UK, and occasional overnight stays in hotels will be required when supporting customers further afield. All accommodation and business travel expenses are paid by the company.
