College’s new Deputy Development Director.

FutureFitz, the College’s £40 million development campaign, underpins the College
Plan. The campaign has two clear priorities: First, funding to ensure the continued
academic success of the College, whether supporting academic colleagues in
undertaking world leading research and teaching, or ensuring we continue to attract
students from all backgrounds and provide them with the right academic and financial
support. Second, funding to improve the College facilities, providing a modern
physical and social environment where ideas can spark.

Over the last two years, we have established the momentum of FutureFitz and have
made an excellent start to fundraising. Richard Buttrey, our new Development
Director is keen to recruit a Deputy who, with him, will be at the heart of building our
success going forward.

About Fitzwilliam

Fitzwilliam is an academic community with a strong identity and a

The College is a special and welcoming community. We combine a passion for academic excellence and enquiry, with a commitment to widening access to
higher education. The College encompasses around 1,000 people including staff, Fellows, undergraduates and postgraduates. In common with all the 31
colleges of the University of Cambridge, Fitzwilliam is an independent, self-governing community.

The College enjoys a large seven-acre site within 10 minutes’ cycle ride of all the major faculties and departments. At the heart of our beautiful grounds is a
fine Regency house. Most of our award-winning contemporary architecture dates from the 1960s onwards including a state-of-the-art auditorium and the
Olisa Library.

Fitzwilliam began in 1869 as a non-collegiate institution (Fitzwilliam Hall) with the specific purpose of providing a Cambridge education to students who
were unable to afford membership of a college. The community became a full college in 1966 and moved to our current site at that time. Baroness Sally
Morgan, is the 9th Master of the College and is just over halfway through her ten-year term. As the former Chair of Ofsted and the current Chair of
Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Baroness Morgan brings a deep experience of the educational sector.

Philanthropy at Fitz

The £40 million FutureFitz campaign is at the heart of our ambition to
evolve, enrich and enhance the College.

Fitz has had a dedicated development office for over 15 years, working to strengthen and develop the relationship with its 12,500 alumni. The College’s first
development campaign, 2008-2019, raised £23.5 million.

The alumni community is diverse and, like the wider College, extremely supportive of development activities. There is also a collaborative working
relationship between the College and the central University Advancement team.

The continuity of purpose from the origins of Fitzwilliam Hall is seen from the funds raised for access and student support that has been at the heart of
the College’s philanthropic vision from the very beginning.

The College’s new College Plan reconfirms our values as an academic community, sets out the medium-term goals for our educational mission and
identifies the actions we need to take to achieve them.

The FutureFitz £40 million campaign activates the ambitions of the College Plan. The campaign target is broken down into two areas: £20 million for an
academic plan and £20 million to support a £50 million estate plan.

The academic plan invests in our teaching and research resources, replenishes the existing extensive financial support for students and provides additional
resources to support widening participation activities ‘getting in and getting on’. The estate plan ensures our buildings meet the College’s needs for the
next 50 years and deliver on our sustainability goals. A key element of the plan is the renovation and intensification of College’s Main Site.

The College has had an excellent start to the campaign, securing gifts at the six and seven figure level, and has a clearly defined, developed prospect
pipeline and good relationships with those capable of giving a substantial gift. The College is confident that the future fundraising potential will deliver
the FutureFitz goal.

The Opportunity
The Deputy Development Director will work closely with colleagues to
deliver the FutureFitz campaign.

The College has recently appointed Richard Buttrey (from Cambridge’s largest technology company), as the new Development Director, to take a fresh
approach to our fundraising work. We are now looking to build a high-performance team with a strong culture of innovation. We welcome applications
from exceptional individuals with or without a background in philanthropy. Either way, you will have demonstrable, transferable skills and a proven track
record of success.

Typically, Deputy Development Directors help manage Development Office teams, oversee reporting, stewardship and fundraising research and analysis.
This position will be accountable and responsible for such activities – but the successful candidate will also receive mentoring on how to interact
effectively with high net worth alumni and will share some of the direct engagement work of securing significant donations. Managing strong alumni
relationships more generally will be a core activity, including via line management of others.

The role will therefore particularly suit an ambitious individual, on track to become a Development Director in the future – or interested in progressing in
an adjacent career with enhanced transferable skills. In recognition of this, the College will consider electing the Deputy Development Director to become
a Bye Fellow if his/her performance merits such a status after two years in post, and renewing this annually thereafter.

You will be joining Fitzwilliam at an important time as we implement the FutureFitz campaign and will play a key part in taking forward a refreshed
fundraising strategy.

The College seeks to take a thought leadership position in the use of AI and other modern data processing techniques to help support the campaign.
Candidates with a particular interest and/or expertise in such technology are strongly encouraged to apply.

That said, our core emphasis will remain on community and the cultivation of instrumental human relationships. The Development Office at Fitz is

The Role

The Deputy Development Director is key to cultivating and managing the
Development team.

Strategy, Management and Representation
• To work closely with the Development Director on fostering a culture of mission-driven excellence within the team, in which everyone understands the
strategy and how their individual contribution fits in – including by directly line managing more junior colleagues.

To ensure that resource allocation matches the strategic intent and that systems and processes are lean and subject to continual improvement – including

robust knowledge management, prospect and gift lifecycle staging and the production of meaningful pipeline reporting for the Governing Body and other
key stakeholders.

To deputise for the Development Director as needed at events, committees, campaign boards, volunteer co-ordination and other meetings – including

professionally representing the College externally in high-profile fora.

Prospect Management and Fundraising

To secure individual gifts of up to £250,000 by successfully cultivating a portfolio of prospective donors as well as supporting the Development Director

and wider Fellowship on gifts into seven-figures and beyond.

To maximise the performance of a broad-based portfolio of regular giving from a large volume of alumni by experimenting and continually improving the

College’s outreach efforts.

To co-ordinate and manage joint prospects with the Central University Advancement team alongside the Development Director, ensuring that the

College’s and the University’s interests are appropriately respected and that the relationship is built on trust.

The Role

Alumni Relations, Stewardship and Reporting

To create and oversee the delivery of a programme of events for Alumni, Benefactors and Donors that delivers demonstrable value and generates

opportunities for both attendees and the College.

To drive the College’s Donor and Benefactors recognition programme, including robust, transparent and regular formal and communication-orientated

reporting that provides confidence that money is effectively spent and enlivens the College community.

To cultivate excellent alumni relations at scale, including by line managing dedicated staff and working closely with the Communications Office on

sharing messages with the right levels of formality, frequency and tone.

Role Title: Deputy Development Director

Reports to:

The Development Director, Richard Buttrey, and works closely with the Master, Bursar, Senior Tutor and other College officers. Deputises for the
Development Director when required.

The Deputy Development Director will be expected to participate fully in relevant College committees including the Development Committee, Health
and Safety Committee, Funds Sub Committee, and the College’s Campaign Board.

The Individual

You will bring highly relevant experience, outstanding skills, and a passion
for the mission of Fitzwilliam.

Qualifications, Education

Essential:

Educated to first degree level or equivalent.

Desirable:

Familiarity with the academic environment, including having undertaken further degrees.
Professional qualifications in data processing, project management or fundraising.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Essential:

Highly-attuned social antennae, combined with strong spoken and written communication skills.
Strong IT skills, especially LLM prompting and automation, Office 365, CRM databases and productivity tools such as Kanban Boards.
Ability to quickly and effectively undertake prospect research, write quality proposals and produce audience-sensitive reporting.
Ability to analyse complex data sets and produce succinct summary dashboards.
Mature organisational and project management skills, notably prioritisation.
Commitment to the values of higher education, Fitzwilliam College and the University of Cambridge.
Enthusiasm to work collaboratively as part of a team.
