Bookkeeper
About the role
We are looking for an experienced Bookkeeper to join our growing group of companies and take responsibility for the day-to-day bookkeeping across three trading businesses.
The group operates across retail, wholesale distribution and commercial fit-out. This creates a varied bookkeeping role covering high-volume retail transactions, supplier and customer accounts, stock-related purchases and project expenditure.
You will work closely with and report to the group's Management Accountant, helping ensure that the underlying financial records across each business are accurate, current and properly reconciled.
This is a part-time position of approximately 20 to 25 hours per week. We can offer considerable flexibility around how those hours are worked during the normal working week, making the position particularly suitable for someone looking for a professional role that can fit around other commitments.
Key responsibilities
- Processing purchase invoices and maintaining the purchase ledger
- Processing sales transactions and maintaining the sales ledger
- Accounts payable and accounts receivable
- Managing supplier and customer account queries
- Bank and credit card reconciliations
- Reconciling control accounts and investigating discrepancies
- Preparing and maintaining accurate bookkeeping records within Xero
- Supporting debtor management and credit control
- Preparing information required for VAT returns
- Supporting PAYE and payroll-related processes
- Processing journals where required
- Maintaining accurate records across multiple group companies
- Supporting month-end processes and providing information to the Management Accountant
- Assisting with cash, retail and wholesale transaction reconciliations
- Maintaining organised financial records and supporting documentation
About you
We are looking for someone with strong practical bookkeeping experience who is comfortable taking ownership of their work.
You should have:
- Previous experience in a Bookkeeper, Accounts Assistant or similar finance role
- Strong practical experience of purchase ledger and sales ledger
- Accounts payable and accounts receivable experience
- Bank reconciliation experience
- Experience supporting VAT and PAYE processes
- Good understanding of basic accounting controls
- Strong attention to detail and an ability to identify discrepancies
- Confidence working across several companies or accounting entities
- Good Excel skills
- Experience using accounting software, ideally Xero
- The ability to work independently and manage recurring deadlines
Experience within retail, wholesale, distribution, stockholding or project-based businesses would be particularly useful.
