Founder's Associate - building a wellness retreat

This is not a* normal job.*

We're building a wellness retreat and events venue from the ground up – set across 150 acres of lakes, parkland and old farm buildings – and we're looking for a Founder’s Associate to work directly with me (George, Co-Founder) as we grow The Shire.

About The Shire

The Shire is a wellness retreat on the Bucks and Northants border, an hour from London. We host company offsites, private events, and weddings across restored farmhouse spaces, an event venue, meeting rooms, and outdoor wellness facilities including sauna, cold plunge, tennis court and swimming lake. We're also about to launch a co-working space.

We're operational and generating revenue, but still very much in build mode. There's accommodation to develop, facilities to expand, systems to create, and a vision to bring to life. We're at the stage where every decision matters and every person shapes what we become.

The role

You’ll be my right-hand person. One day you might be helping plan and run a retreat, the next you’re working with contractors on a build project, shooting content, improving the guest experience, writing proposals, or figuring out a solution to a problem that didn’t exist yesterday .

This is a broad, hands-on role for someone who is smart, curious, and hungry to learn. Someone comfortable with ambiguity, happy rolling up their sleeves when needed, and genuinely excited by building something rather than maintaining it.

No two days are the same. That’s very much the point.

You’ll work across

You’ll get exposure to every part of the business, including:

● Planning and delivering events, retreats and offsites

● Helping shape and improve the guest experience

● Implementing AI to streamline processes

● Writing proposals and responding to enquiries

● Supporting build and infrastructure projects on site

● Working with contractors and suppliers

● Managing timelines and keeping projects moving forward

● Helping capture content (photo, video, social)

● Thinking through new ideas, partnerships and offerings

● Generally helping keep the wheels turning as we grow

Some days are strategic, some are intensely practical. You need to enjoy both. You'll never be bored.

Practical bits

● Location: Hybrid. Based on site at The Shire, NN12 7LS a minimum of four days per week

● Hours: Full-time, typically Monday-Friday but with flexibility required for events (occasional weekends when we have bookings, with time back in lieu).

● Salary dependent on experience, with clear progression as you take on more responsibility

● 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays

Reporting to: George (Co-Founder)

Team: There’s a growing team of us at The Shire, but you’ll be the first full-time hire - a genuine chance to shape the founding team.
