The Role
As a Level 2 Rail Engineering Operative Apprentice, you’ll work within a safety critical environment, supporting the day to day delivery of operational rail activities.
Working under supervision, you’ll gain the skills, knowledge and behaviours required to support safe railway operations, from preparing worksites and assisting with possessions and isolations, through to recording data and supporting on track activities.
This is a hands on, practical role where you’ll learn on the job while completing a structured apprenticeship programme.
What You’ll Be Doing
Throughout the programme, you will:
- Support the preparation and set up of railway worksites
- Assist with isolations, possessions and safe access arrangements
- Use tools and specialist equipment under supervision
- Follow strict health, safety and environmental procedures at all times
- Communicate clearly with colleagues, supervisors and stakeholders
- Complete documentation, reports and operational records accurately
- Contribute to data collection, reporting and quality assurance processes

Apprenticeship Programme
This is a Level 2 Rail Engineering Operative Apprenticeship:
- Duration: 15 months
- Training: combination of classroom based learning and on the job experience
- Content includes:
- Health, safety and safe working practices
- Worksite preparation and planning
- Isolations, possessions and operational procedures
- Railway infrastructure and tools
- Communication, teamwork and professional behaviours
- Reporting, documentation and quality assurance
You’ll also build a portfolio of evidence and complete assessments throughout the programme before progressing to your End Point Assessment.
Entry Requirements
- Right to work in the UK
- Willingness to work shifts, including nights and weekends
- Ability to travel to different work locations
- A full UK driving licence
Training & Development
You’ll receive structured training and support throughout your apprenticeship, gaining the competencies needed to work safely on the rail infrastructure.
On completion, you will be a qualified Level 2 Rail Engineering Operative.
