Technical Scrutineer (Marine Compliance)
Location: Petersfield, Hampshire (Hybrid)
Employment Type: Part-Time - Contractor (3 days per week, pro rata)
- £32,000 – £38,000 FTE (pro rata for 3 days per week), depending on experience.

About YBDSA
The Yacht Brokers, Designers and Surveyors Association (YBDSA) is the UK's leading professional membership association for Yacht Brokers, Designers and Surveyors. Since 1912, our members have set the standards for professional competence, integrity and technical excellence.
The YBDSA Certifying Authority operates under contract with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), providing coding and certification services for commercial vessels under 24 metres.
About the Role
YDSA is seeking a Technical Scrutineer to join our Certifying Authority team, supporting the certification of commercial vessels under 24m on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).
This is an excellent opportunity for someone with a marine technical background who enjoys problem-solving, technical review, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. You'll play a key role in reviewing certification applications, liaising with surveyors and the MCA, and helping maintain the high standards of our Certifying Authority.
Key Responsibilities
Review vessel coding applications and technical documentation for compliance with MCA Codes of Practice.
Respond to technical queries from surveyors, clients, and the MCA.
Liaise with the MCA on audits, compliance issues, and certification matters.
Monitor regulatory changes.
Support surveyor training, technical meetings, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Maintain accurate records using CRM and certification systems.
About You
You'll have:
· A strong technical or engineering background, ideally in the marine sector.
· Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills.
· Experience reviewing technical documentation and interpreting regulations.
· Strong communication and organisational skills.
· The ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Desirable
· Yacht or small craft surveying experience.
· Knowledge of MCA Codes of Practice and vessel certification.
· Experience within a Certifying Authority, Classification Society, or regulatory
environment.
