About the Role

Almondsbury Garden Centre is seeking an enthusiastic, commercially minded Assistant Shop Manager to support the day-to-day operation of our retail business. This is a hands-on leadership role requiring strong people management, stock control, merchandising, and commercial awareness.

Working closely with the Shop Manager, you will help lead the retail team, maintain exceptional standards throughout the store, and drive sales through effective stock management and product presentation. Experience in buying and supplier management would be a significant advantage.

Key Responsibilities

Team Leadership

Support, motivate and develop the retail team to deliver excellent customer service.
Assist with recruitment, training, coaching and performance management.
Lead by example and promote a positive, customer-focused culture.
Manage staff rotas and daily operational requirements.

Stock Management

Monitor stock levels and availability across all retail departments.
Analyse sales performance and stock movement to maximise profitability.
Manage replenishment processes and minimise stock losses.
Oversee stock takes and inventory accuracy.
Ensure seasonal ranges are delivered effectively and on time.

Buying & Commercial Management

Assist with product selection and range planning.
Build and maintain relationships with suppliers.
Identify new products and trends to enhance the customer offer.
Negotiate pricing and promotional opportunities where appropriate.
Support the planning and execution of seasonal retail events.

Visual Merchandising & Standards

Maintain high standards of visual merchandising throughout the store.
Create engaging product displays that inspire customers and drive sales.
Ensure pricing, signage and promotional activity are accurate and effective.
Uphold health and safety standards at all times.

Customer Experience

Deliver exceptional customer service and resolve customer queries professionally.
Act as a key point of contact for customers and team members.
Help create a welcoming and enjoyable shopping environment.

Skills & Experience

Essential

Previous retail management or supervisory experience.
Strong people management and leadership skills.
Proven stock management and inventory control experience.
Commercial awareness with the ability to analyse sales and stock data.
Excellent organisational and communication skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced retail environment.

Desirable

Buying experience within retail, garden centre, home, gift, lifestyle or related sectors.
Experience working within a garden centre or destination retail environment.
Visual merchandising experience.
Knowledge of EPOS and stock management systems.
