Job Title: Science Instructor (Maternity Cover)
Salary/Grade: Starting £28,000 - £30,000. Potential for increase depending on experience.
Hours: 8:00am-4:00pm all year around
Contract Type: Temporary. Maternity Cover until 21st July 2027.
Supervised by: Teaching and Learning Lead
Main Purpose: To deliver engaging and accessible Science lessons to pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). The successful candidate will teach Science across KS3 Entry Level and KS4 GCSE Biology, adapting pre-planned lessons to meet individual learning needs and helping pupils make progress in a supportive learning environment.
Key ResponsibilitiesTeaching and Learning
- Deliver high-quality Science lessons to KS3 Entry Level and KS4 GCSE Biology pupils.
- Adapt existing lesson plans and resources to meet the individual needs of SEND learners.
- Create a calm, structured and inclusive classroom environment where pupils can achieve success.
- Use a range of teaching strategies to engage pupils with a variety of learning needs.
- Encourage pupils to develop confidence, independence and a positive attitude towards Science.
Assessment
- Monitor and record pupil progress.
- Provide feedback to pupils and contribute to assessment records.
- Work with the Teaching and Learning Lead to identify pupils requiring additional support.
Working with Others
- Work collaboratively with teaching assistants and other staff to support pupil learning.
- Communicate effectively with parents/carers when required.
- Attend relevant meetings and training.
Safeguarding
- Promote the welfare and safety of all pupils at all times.
- Report any safeguarding concerns immediately in line with school policies and Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE).
- Maintain professional boundaries and follow all safeguarding procedures.
General Responsibilities
- Promote equality, diversity and inclusion.
- Follow school policies relating to health and safety, behaviour and data protection.
- Undertake relevant CPD and mandatory safeguarding training.
- Carry out other reasonable duties appropriate to the role.

QUALITIES
Qualification and training
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or a recognised teaching qualification. (not essential)
- Degree or relevant qualification in Biology or another Science subject.
- Experience of working with young people, preferably within a school or SEND setting.
- Knowledge of Science, particularly Biology to GCSE level.
- Ability to adapt learning to meet a range of SEND needs.
Skills & Knowledge
- Experience teaching KS3 Science and/or GCSE Biology.
- Knowledge of Entry Level Science qualifications.
- Good classroom management and communication skills.
- Good organisational and IT skills.
- Experience supporting pupils with additional needs including autism, ADHD, SEMH or moderate learning difficulties.

- Responsibility for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and for raising any concerns
- Ability to form and maintain appropriate relationships and personal boundaries with children, young people and vulnerable adults Willingness to continuously update skills and knowledge
