The Opportunity
An established engineering and technology business is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join its growing engineering team. This position offers the opportunity to lead the design and development of sophisticated industrial equipment, taking projects from initial concept through to manufacture, deployment, and ongoing product support.
This is a hands-on engineering role suited to an individual who enjoys solving complex technical challenges, driving innovation, and taking full ownership of product development activities.
Key ResponsibilitiesMechanical Design & Development
- Lead the design and development of mechanical systems, assemblies, and components.
- Manage projects through the full product lifecycle, from concept and specification through to production release and end-of-life support.
- Produce detailed 3D CAD models, manufacturing drawings, and technical documentation.
- Perform engineering calculations, tolerance studies, and structural assessments to ensure robust and reliable designs.
- Select appropriate materials and manufacturing methods to achieve performance and cost objectives.
- Build, evaluate, and refine prototype designs where required.
Project Delivery
- Take ownership of engineering work packages and ensure successful delivery against project milestones.
- Plan and manage workload effectively while providing regular progress updates to stakeholders.
- Operate within structured product development processes and engineering review frameworks.
- Identify technical and commercial risks and implement appropriate mitigation measures.
- Present technical solutions and project updates to management teams when required.
Testing & Validation
- Develop and execute test plans to verify product performance and reliability.
- Collaborate with testing and production teams during validation activities.
- Analyse test results, identify root causes of issues, and implement design improvements.
- Support product acceptance activities and manufacturing readiness reviews.
Problem Solving & Product Support
- Investigate and resolve product and design-related issues using a structured engineering approach.
- Support manufacturing and service teams with technical problem-solving activities.
- Drive corrective actions and continuous product improvement initiatives.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with electrical, software, manufacturing, and service teams to deliver integrated engineering solutions.
- Liaise with suppliers and external partners to ensure components and assemblies meet technical requirements.
- Develop strong working relationships across all areas of the business.
Leadership & Mentoring
- Provide guidance and technical support to junior engineers.
- Share best practice and contribute to the development of engineering standards.
- Support a collaborative, quality-focused engineering culture.
Candidate RequirementsEssential
- Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.
- Significant experience in mechanical design within a manufacturing or industrial engineering environment.
- Strong proficiency with 3D CAD software, ideally SolidWorks or similar packages.
- Excellent understanding of materials, manufacturing techniques, and design for manufacture principles.
- Proven ability to deliver engineering projects within agreed timescales.
- Strong analytical, fault-finding, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Effective communication skills with the ability to engage both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Self-motivated with a proactive and practical approach to engineering challenges.
Desirable
- Experience designing industrial machinery, automated equipment, or complex electromechanical systems.
- Knowledge of structured product development and stage-gate processes.
- Experience working within highly regulated or precision engineering environments.
