We are seeking a suitably qualified Cardiac Physiologist / Echocardiographer to join our team at the
Royal Surrey County Hospital Team and need to cover HASLEMERE site as well.
The Cardiology Business Unit provides a full invasive and non-invasive cardiac service including
cardiac catheterisation. The department also offers physiologist-led exercise testing, 24 hour ECG
and BP monitoring and event recording. We have a busy Pacemaker/ICD implant and follow-up
service; we are the leading implant centre in Surrey for ICDs and CRTs.
In terms of echocardiography, the department currently performs around 10000-12000 routine
echoes annually and around 1000 advance echoes such as Stress, Contrast and TOE.
BSE accreditation in adult Echocardiography is essential (or EACVI). Applicants will have a BSc in
Clinical Physiology or equivalent and at least 1 year post BSE qualification experience in
Transthoracic Echocardiography.
In conjunction with the Head of Cardiac Physiology, provide leadership and direction for the Cardiac Physiology service at Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust & to support the team of Cardiac Physiologists in developing their professional skills and enable them to maximize their performance.
To be responsible for day to day running of the Cardiology diagnostic service delivered from the Haslemere Proactive Care Hub (PACH).

Provide oversite of the ambulatory monitoring service and expert rhythm analysis delivered from the PACH.
- Assist the Head of Cardiac Physiology with any plans for service expansion associated with PACH.
- Act as a technical specialist in the field of CRM providing technical advice as required; primarily to physiologist colleagues, medical staff and to a lesser extent Nurse Consultants/Specialists and Echo Team.
- To deliver expert care to patients undergoing implantation and follow-up of implantable devices and to ensure that the device service interfaces with other non-invasive and invasive services as effectively as possible.
- Set local technical standards in the fields of CRM and to continually develop and update these to ensure they incorporate current professional recommendations and evidence based practice.
- Keep abreast of developments in non-invasive diagnostic monitoring and implantable device technology across a broad range of manufacturers, acting as a point of contact for company representatives.
- In conjunction with the Head of Cardiac Physiology develop a training programme for more junior physiologists.
- Keep up to date with new developments in the fields non invasive diagnostics and CRM and to attend relevant courses and conferences.
- Act as a specialist in the field of technical cardiology, giving expert professional advice where required.
- Demonstrate a high standard of technical proficiency in a wide range of techniques and to actively maintain competency in these.
- Competently provide haemodynamic monitoring and procedural records during diagnostic and interventional cardiac catheterisation procedures.
- Act as technical operator, assisting the consultant physician in diagnosis and optimal treatment approach for a range of cardiac arrhythmias.
- Perform solo implantable cardiac defibrillator (ICD) and pacemaker implantation, including selection of appropriate hardware for implantation and programming of device to tailor therapy for each individual patient.
- Perform solo ICD and pacemaker follow-up, acting autonomously to optimise programming for each patient and decide when further diagnostic testing or medical intervention is required.
- Take responsibility for set-up and safe usage of expensive and complex medical equipment during routine and specialist diagnostic/interventional procedures.
- Demonstrate sound communication skills in explaining ICD/pacemaker function with patients and/or partners and carers, including implications/limitations of therapy, cause/treatment of complications, advisories or technical warnings issued by the MHRA and intervention required.
- Demonstrate detailed technical/clinical knowledge and high level of expertise in all areas of non-invasive cardiac testing including advanced ECG analysis, unsupervised exercise testing, 24 hour ECG tapes and reporting for all the above.
- To provide cover to non invasive areas in the instance of staff shortages.
- Work closely with the Senior Chief Cardiac Physiologist to provide leadership for the entire technical and administrative team, ensuring the smooth running of an efficient and effective service.
- Support the specialist Chief Cardiac Physiologists (Training & Development in CRM, EP, Invasive and Non-Invasive Cardiology) in setting local technical and professional standards in complex techniques and to ensure these are continually developed and updated to incorporate current professional recommendations and evidence based practice.
- Take a proactive approach to minimising clinical risk to device patients and to those undergoing pacemaker/ICD procedures and to manage any related clinical incidents, in conjunction with Senior Chief Cardiac Physiologist.
- With the support of the Senior Chief Cardiac Physiologist, participate in the purchase of capital equipment.
- Initiate and encourage the development of innovate practices and solutions within the department.
- To keep accurate patient records and lead departmental audits.
