Knowl Hill School is an independent specialist school dedicated to supporting students with Dyslexia and other Specific Learning Disabilities (SPLD) with two schools located in Pirbright and Bisley (Surrey). Role Overview:
We are seeking a full time Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) to join our multidisciplinary team. As an SLT in our specialist school, you will assess, plan, and implement therapeutic interventions that support students with Dyslexia and other co-occurring difficulties in developing their speech, language and communication skills.
The role involves collaborating with teachers, learning support assistants, and other professionals to ensure that students' speech, language and communication needs are addressed to maximise their learning potential.
You will join the established therapy team (SLTs and OTs) within Knowl Hill School, and access supervision and training to support your professional development within the role. This role offers the opportunity to develop as a school based SLT and to specialise skills within a rewarding and therapeutically dynamic setting. The role may require you to work across both school campuses.
Key Responsibilities:
· Assessment: Conduct comprehensive assessments of students’ speech, language and communication skills to identify any barriers to learning or daily activities.
· Individualised Therapy Plans: Develop and implement individualised therapy plans tailored to each student’s specific speech, language and communication needs, ensuring that interventions are aligned with their educational goals and provision stated within the EHCP. To provide programmes for Therapy assistants to follow.
· Classroom Support: Collaborate with teachers to provide strategies for aiding carryover of speech, language and communication skills into classroom activities.
· Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with other specialists, such as occupational therapists, educational psychologists, and the SENCO, to provide holistic support and ensure a consistent approach to each student’s needs. To be involved in departmental development projects.
· Monitoring and Reporting: Regularly track students’ progress, document therapy sessions, and evaluate the effectiveness of interventions. Prepare and provide reports for parents, teachers, and external professionals when needed.
· Parent and Staff Support: Offer guidance to parents and staff on how to support students’ speech, language and communication skills both in and out of school. Provide training and resources to staff on incorporating speech and language therapy strategies into the classroom. To engage with the appraisal and supervision system, including supervision of therapy assistants.
· Maintain Confidentiality: Ensure all student information is kept confidential and that you adhere to safeguarding policies and regulations. Developing Your Practice
· Take an active role in your own professional development, supported through appraisals and the RCSLT framework for new and recently qualified speech and language therapists
· Build your skills through regular clinical supervision and reflective practice
· Attend training to stay up to date with best practice in speech, language and communication needs
· Maintain your HCPC and RCSLT registration
· Work towards agreed goals that support both your caseload and wider school priorities
Teaching, Training & Collaboration
· Contribute to team projects, including audits and service development initiatives
· Support and deliver training to school staff on communication needs and strategies
· Work closely with colleagues, families and other professionals to achieve the best outcomes
Policy & Quality Improvement
· Follow and adhere to the school policies and procedures, particularly around SEND, safeguarding, GDPR and legal frameworks
· Contribute ideas to improve services
· Take part in initiatives that promote quality, safety, and effective practice
Organisation & Caseload Management
· Keep clear, accurate and professional records in line with HCPC and RCSLT standards
· Manage and prioritise your caseload with support from your supervisor
· Share information appropriately, in line with data protection requirements
· Contribute to audits and reporting to support service development
Key Skills & Experience:
· Qualifications: A recognised qualification in Speech and Language Therapy (e.g., BSc or MSc), with registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) required and membership with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapy (RCSLT)
· Therapeutic Skills: Experience in assessing and providing therapy for children with a range of speech, language and communication needs.
· Collaboration and Communication: Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with teachers, support staff, and parents to ensure student progress and well-being.
· Adaptability: Ability to adapt therapy approaches to the individual needs of students.
· Record Keeping: Excellent organisational skills with the ability to maintain accurate and up-to-date records of assessments, interventions, and student progress.
Desirable:
· Experience: Previous experience working as a Speech and Language Therapist within a school, with children with learning difficulties such as Dyslexia and SpLD.
· Understanding of SpLD: A sound understanding of the speech, language and communication needs of children with Dyslexia and other SpLD.
· EHCP: Understanding or familiarity with education health care plans.
