Locum Consultant in the department of Anaesthetics

This is 10 PA locum appointments for 2 x Consultant Anaesthetists. This post will be available as soon as possible for a period of 6 months.

The posts will deliver 10 PAs flexibly supporting the anaesthetic team at the Leeds General Infirmary and St James’s University Hospital, Leeds.

The successful applicants should hold accreditation in FRCA in the Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent and should be on the Specialist Register or within six months of being admitted to the Register for trainees if currently in a training programme within the UK at the time of interview or have references which have been authorised by the Deputy Medical Director and Clinical Director.

Applicants should have established skills in anaesthesia, excellent communication and team working skills, a strong commitment to teaching and service development are essential. Applicants are expected to embody The Leeds Way values by delivering patient-centred care, working collaboratively, treating patients and colleagues with fairness, and empowering those around them. A strong sense of accountability is essential to ensure we make the best use of the resources available to us.

Job Summary

This is a 10 PA locum appointment for a Consultant Anaesthetist.

The posts will deliver 10 PAs supporting the anaesthetic team. The posts will be based at the Leeds General Infirmary or St James’s University Hospital depending upon service need and candidates’ skills and experience. The successful applicant will join an existing team of over 150 Consultants.

We are looking for a motivated and skilled Locum Consultant Anaesthetist to join our team at Leeds Teaching Hospitals. You'll work collaboratively with consultant colleagues, delivering high-quality anaesthetic care across diverse surgical specialities. We'll rely on you to support service plans, adapting to evolving clinical practices and new technologies. You are expected to be involved in progressing the Clinical Governance agenda, ensuring the highest standards of patient safety and care. You will have the opportunity to shape the development of future doctors and anaesthetists by supervising and teaching undergraduates and anaesthesia residents. What you will bring to the role

The core purpose of this post is to work alongside other consultant colleagues to deliver a comprehensive anaesthetic service within the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust while actively supporting the speciality's service plans by embracing changes in clinical practice and new technologies. A key responsibility will also be to engage with and advance Clinical Governance initiatives. The appointee is expected to maintain and contribute to the existing teaching and research activities within the Trust, such as supervising resident doctors and undergraduate students.

This full-time Consultant Anaesthetics post involves 8.5 PAs of direct clinical care and 1.5 PAs for supporting professional activities, delivered within a carefully designed rota to ensure robust cover. Your job plan will be reviewed annually, with interim reviews as needed, and you will be managerially accountable to the Chief Executive and professionally to the Chief Medical Officer. You are expected to adhere to the General Medical Council's "Good Medical Practice" and the Trust's "Core Behaviours" for conduct, including reporting concerns about colleagues, and participate in mandatory annual appraisals. All leave must follow Trust policy, typically requiring eight weeks' notice. You'll undertake all necessary training, including mandatory training and continuing medical education, which the Trust fully supports with time and funding. The role provides necessary secretarial support and IT facilities, and you must comply with all Trust Health and Safety and Infection Control policies, including Universal Infection Control Precautions and diligent hand hygiene practices. Finally, maintaining strict patient confidentiality is paramount.

Candidates for this post must hold FRCA or equivalent accreditation and have completed a recognised higher specialist training program in Anaesthesia or be within six months of specialist registration in the UK. Essential requirements include demonstrating extensive clinical experience and competence across all areas of anaesthesia, with prior experience in research being desirable. The successful appointee will have the opportunity to contribute to clinical audit activities, including mortality and morbidity meetings, clinical audit programs, and the development and application of clinical guidelines, with allocated time in their job plan for these supporting professional activities. They are also expected to maintain and update their skills through continuous medical education, as detailed in the separate person specification document.
