Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, wish to appoint a consultant Emergency General Surgeon with specialist interest in Benign Pancreatobiliary Surgery. This is an exciting new hybrid post to support both an established pancreatobiliary team and emergency general surgical care as part of a larger EGS surgical team. It is expected that the successful candidate will be part of the general surgery on-call rota at the Royal site.
Applications are invited for suitably qualified individuals for a Consultant Emergency General Surgeon with specialist interest in Pancreatobiliary Surgery. This is a full-time post, but all applications will be considered on merit, including those hoping to work less than full time.
Job Purpose:
The post holder will have full and continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge, including all administrative duties associated with patient care.
Leadership, development, and organisation of the services in his/her charge in line with the Trusts’ business plans.
Liaise and work in collaboration with the Lead Clinicians, Senior Management, and operational teams for Surgery and with the multi-disciplinary teams (MDT) that support the service.
With the agreement of the Clinical Lead and Clinical Service Group Director, development of his/her own interests and sub-specialties within the specialty, in line with business planning principles and commissioners’ approval, including active participation in research programmes.
Corporate and individual responsibility for the professional management of doctors in training.
The post holder must liaise with appropriate teams to ensure that cover is provided within the specialty during periods of leave of absence having regard for your own sessional commitments to ensure optimal utilization of clinics and list and minimal impact to patients.

The merger of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital with Aintree Hospital to form LUHFT has brought high volume specialist surgery to the Royal site and a need to expand the workforce to cover both emergency general surgical as well as specialist work. The separation of emergency general surgery on-calls from specialty on-calls has opened opportunities for an EGS devoted individual with pancreatobiliary surgical experience to help shape the service including the newly developed and resourced ambulatory emergency surgery service. This includes managing and contributing to the ‘hot’ ambulatory lists including the gallbladder service.
We are looking for a keen, dynamic Consultant willing to integrate with the existing subspecialty teams who currently provide Emergency General Surgery on-call for the South of the city to deliver a first-class service. The post holder will help meet waiting list targets for general surgical procedures and help shape the evolving emergency surgery (EGS) model.
This is a full-time post consisting of 10 PAs, of which 1.5 are dedicated SPA time. The job plan and SPA entitlement will be formally reviewed after 6 months and adjusted as necessary. The new appointee is expected to have their main elective and emergency work at the Royal Liverpool site, but also support cover for Emergency General Surgery for the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre, Liverpool Women’s Hospital and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital as part of the wider Liverpool University Hospitals Group commitment. The post will cover emergency general surgery oncall (8am-5pm) on a 1:8 basis. Elective activity is expected to be focussed on biliary surgery including managing referrals, clinics and elective operating. Additionally, an experienced applicant will be supported to develop our complex biliary surgery pathways, potentially including intraoperative laparoscopic USS, CBD exploration and combined surgical and endoscopic procedures. There is an opportunity for an appropriately qualified applicant to develop a therapeutic endoscopy interest, including endoscopic necrosectomy, to support the pancreatitis pathway. This practice will be supported by attendance at the complex benign pancreatic MDT and through close working with the Pancreatic surgical and specialist gastrointestinal team. Education and training of the new generation of surgeons is a priority for LUHFT. The post holder will have a dedicated role in providing supervision and teaching of undergraduate students from the University of Liverpool.

Applicants must have full GMC registration, entry on the Specialist Register for General Surgery via CCT or CESR (CP) or European Community Rights- proposed CCT/CESR(CP) date must be within 6 months of interview. They should be able to provide evidence of high standards achieved in technical operating, especially in Biliary Surgery. If successful, you will be joining a well-established unit and will be expected to participate in the development of our future services.
