Retail Store Manager – The Blue Barn, Killinghall, Harrogate

Full-time | Permanent

Are you an experienced retail manager who loves leading people, delivering outstanding customer service and running a successful store?

We're looking for an enthusiastic and hands-on Store Manager to lead our newly acquired Killinghall store as it begins an exciting new chapter under The Blue Barn brand.

About us

The Blue Barn is an independent, family-owned retailer specialising in pet supplies, animal feed and country living products. Since 1994 we've built our reputation on knowledgeable advice, exceptional customer service and a genuine passion for animals.

Following the acquisition of the long-established Pharmall Country Store in Killinghall, we're investing in the future of the business and creating a fantastic destination for pet owners, horse owners, smallholders, garden bird enthusiasts and farmers across North Yorkshire.

This is an exciting opportunity to shape the future of an established store while enjoying the support of a successful and growing independent business.

The role

As Store Manager, you'll take full responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the Killinghall store. You'll lead and inspire your team, deliver excellent customer service and ensure the store is commercially successful, well presented and a great place to shop.

Working closely with our buying, warehouse and support teams in Pool in Wharfedale, you'll help ensure we stock the right products at the right time while identifying opportunities to grow sales and develop the business.

Key responsibilities

Lead, motivate and develop the store team.
Deliver outstanding customer service every day.
Take ownership of sales performance
Maintain excellent merchandising and store presentation.
Manage stock levels, ordering and replenishment.
Ensure the store operates safely, efficiently and in line with company standards.
Build strong relationships with customers and become part of the local community.
Identify opportunities to improve the customer experience and grow sales.

About you

You'll be someone who enjoys taking ownership, leading by example and creating a positive environment for both customers and colleagues.

Essential

Previous experience managing a retail store or department.
A proven track record of delivering excellent customer service.
Experience leading, coaching and developing a retail team.
Strong commercial awareness with the ability to drive sales and manage stock effectively.
Excellent organisational and communication skills.
A hands-on approach and willingness to get involved in every aspect of store life.
A positive, approachable personality and a genuine desire to work for a family-owned business.

Desirable

Experience opening or relaunching a retail store.
Experience within the pet, animal feed, equestrian or agricultural retail sector.
Knowledge of pet nutrition or animal care.
A passion for animals or experience as a pet owner.
