Operations Applications & Platform Engineer
Department: Technical
Reports to: Group Technical Director
Hours: Monday to Friday 09:00–17:30 with planned out-of-hours maintenance and on-call support.
Role Overview
The Applications & Platform Engineer is responsible for the management, support and continual improvement of the operational applications and platforms that power services.
The role is focused on application ownership, platform administration, system integration, monitoring, automation and technology transformation. Working across both cloud and on-premise environments, the successful candidate will lead application deployments, upgrades, migrations and continual improvements, ensuring critical business systems remain secure, reliable and aligned with operational needs.
Working closely with Infrastructure, Engineering, Service Delivery, Projects and Commercial teams, the role will help deliver new technologies, improve business processes and support the continued evolution of Orbital's operational platforms.
Key Responsibilities
- Own operations and administration of a portfolio of operational applications and management platforms.
- Support application deployments, upgrades, migrations and platform lifecycle management.
- Configure, maintain and optimise business-critical systems.
- Support the integration of applications using APIs, automation and third-party services.
- Administer monitoring, alerting and reporting platforms to improve operational visibility.
- Manage application performance, availability and operational resilience.
- Coordinate maintenance, patching, licensing and vendor support.
- Support business system improvements and digital transformation initiatives.
- Produce technical documentation, support procedures and platform standards.
- Assist with automation of operational workflows and repetitive administrative tasks.
- Work alongside Engineering and Infrastructure teams to ensure applications are delivered on resilient, secure platforms.
- Support planned maintenance, project delivery and technical escalations.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Experience administering operational applications, systems and platforms.
- Experience delivering upgrades, migrations and platform implementations.
- Experience supporting monitoring, management or service delivery platforms.
- Knowledge of application lifecycle management and change control.
- Experience integrating business systems through APIs or automation.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Familiarity with virtualisation and cloud-hosted platforms.
- Excellent documentation and stakeholder communication skills.
Desirable
Experience with one or more of:
- Monitoring and Management platforms
- Ubiquiti Management Systems (UISP, Air Control, Controllers).
- Git
- PowerShell, Bash or Python
- API development and integrations
- Identity and authentication platforms
- ITSM or Service Management platforms
Experience within an ISP, telecommunications, MSP or technology provider would be advantageous.
