About the Role
Blyth Accountants is a growing independent accountancy practice based in Glasgow, offering hands-on experience, direct client exposure and genuine progression within a supportive environment.
This is an opportunity for an Assistant Accountant with accountancy practice experience to take the next step in their career. You will work closely with the business owner across a varied client portfolio, gaining exposure to all aspects of practice work while developing towards a more senior role.
This role is suited to someone who already has a solid grounding in practice work and is looking to build on that experience, rather than someone at the early stages of their accounting career.
Key Responsibilities
- Preparing and reviewing bookkeeping across Xero, FreeAgent and Sage
- Preparing and submitting VAT returns
- Managing bank reconciliations, ledgers and client records
- Processing payroll and supporting CIS compliance
- Assisting with management accounts and month-end processes
- Supporting year end accounts preparation for sole traders, partnerships and limited companies
- Liaising directly with clients to obtain information and resolve queries
- Dealing with HMRC on client matters, with support where required
- Maintaining accurate digital records and working papers
What We’re Looking For
This role requires someone who can contribute from day one, with the ability to work independently on core tasks.
Essential
- Previous experience working in an accountancy practice
- Strong bookkeeping skills across cloud-based software
- Experience preparing VAT returns with a good understanding of VAT basics
- Experience supporting month-end or management accounts, even if at an assist level
- Confident communicating with clients and handling day to day queries
- Good understanding of core accounting principles including debits, credits, profit and loss and balance sheet
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage workload proactively
Desirable
- AAT qualified or part qualified
- Studying towards ACCA or CIMA, or planning to start
- Experience with CIS
- Exposure to year end accounts preparation

Salary and Benefits
- £26,000 to £28,000 depending on experience
