Senior Compliance Officer (Legal & Regulatory)

Position: Full-Time Senior Compliance Officer (Legal & Regulatory)
Working hours: 8 hours per day, 5 days a week
Salary: £38,000 per annum
Location: Birmingham, onsite
Closing date: 24 August 2026

The role

The Senior Compliance Officer will support the MLRO and senior management in maintaining an effective regulatory compliance and financial-crime framework.

The role combines practical compliance responsibilities with legal and regulatory research, policy drafting, contract review and oversight of international payment partners. It is particularly suitable for an experienced compliance professional with a degree in law, commercial law, business law or a related discipline.

Key responsibilities

Support the MLRO in maintaining the company’s compliance and financial-crime framework.
Review and approve higher-risk onboarding, enhanced due-diligence and transaction-monitoring cases.
Investigate PEP, sanctions, adverse-media and suspicious-activity alerts.
Review source-of-funds and source-of-wealth evidence.
Escalate potentially suspicious activity to the MLRO.
Monitor compliance with FCA requirements, the Payment Services Regulations, Money Laundering Regulations, sanctions requirements and Consumer Duty.
Research legal and regulatory developments and assess their impact on the business.
Draft and update policies, procedures, risk assessments and compliance guidance.
Conduct compliance monitoring, quality-assurance reviews and control testing.
Review customer terms, partner contracts and commercial agreements from a legal and regulatory perspective.
Support due diligence and ongoing oversight of banks, payment providers, agents and international payout partners.
Assist with FCA returns, regulatory notifications, audits and information requests.
Prepare compliance reports and management information for senior management and the Board.
Provide practical compliance advice to operational and customer-service teams.
Deliver compliance training to employees and relevant partners.
Liaise with external legal advisers where specialist legal advice is required.
Support and supervise junior compliance team members when required.
Deputise for senior compliance management when appropriate.

Essential requirements

A bachelor’s degree in Law, Commercial Law, Business Law, Law with Business or a closely related discipline.
At least two years’ relevant experience in compliance, financial crime, legal service
Experience within payments, fintech, banking or money remittance.
Good understanding of AML/CTF, customer due diligence, enhanced due diligence, sanctions and transaction monitoring.
Strong legal and regulatory research and drafting skills.
Ability to analyse complex cases and make clear, risk-based decisions.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
High level of accuracy, professional judgement and attention to detail.
Right to work in the United Kingdom.

Desirable requirements

ICA, ACAMS or another recognised compliance qualification.
Experience working for an authorised payment institution or electronic money institution.
Knowledge of safeguarding, Consumer Duty and FCA regulatory reporting.
Experience reviewing commercial contracts or partner agreements.
Experience overseeing agents or international payment partners.
Previous responsibility for supporting or supervising junior team members.
Additional language skills relevant to Altras’s international markets.

Language requirements

Excellent written and spoken English is essential.
Fluency in Arabic, French or another language relevant to Altras’s international markets would be an advantage.
