Full job description

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.

The role:

This is a National Training Post designed to lead to registration as a Clinical Scientist with the Healthcare Professions Council and will be based within the Glasgow Royal Infirmary Assisted Conception Service (ACS). The ACS has recently undergone major refurbishment of laboratory facilities, outpatients and clinical treatment suite and re-opened in September 2014. The new facilities provide state of the art equipment and a comprehensive range of clinical techniques, offering a high standard of treatment tailored to suit individual patient needs.

The Unit is licensed by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) and provides semen analysis, surgical sperm retrieval (SSR), sperm cryopreservation, ovulation induction, intrauterine insemination (IUI), in vitro fertilisation (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), embryo cryopreservation, donor insemination, oocyte donation, oocyte cryopreservation, and preimplantation genetic testing (PGT). The laboratory carries out approximately 600 semen analyses, approximately 1000 cycles of IVF/ICSI, 750 frozen thawed embryo transfers and 300 IUIs with both partner’s and donor sperm. The Unit obtained an HFEA licence for clinical PGT in 2001 and was awarded National Specialist Service funding to provide a Scotland wide PGT service in April 2005.

All roles will be assessed for sponsorship eligibility in line with current Home Office requirements. NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) can only issue a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) where these are met.

Key responsibilities:

You will join a team of dedicated embryologists and, under the supervision of the Lead Clinical Embryologist, will become proficient and participate in all embryology and andrology procedures for the assessment and treatment of infertility. These include in vitro fertilisation (IVF), intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), gamete recruitment and donation, gamete and embryo cryopreservation and surgical sperm retrieval.

You will be expected to undertake training and deliver clinical work at an exceptionally high standard, with meticulous attention to detail.

Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:

A recognised Life Sciences degree in a relevant biological science awarded at 2;2 or above with a related MSc or PhD is essential.
Employment experience within an IVF setting is desirable
