**Due to an unexpected change in circumstances, this position has become available again and we are looking to appoint as soon as possible. We would also be very happy to hear from candidates who previously applied for the role.**
Location: Hatch Beauchamp, Taunton, TA3 6SE / Hybrid
Hours: 15–20 hours per week
Salary: £18–£24 per hour, dependent on experience
Start: As soon as possible
Employment: Permanent, part-time
The Role
We are looking for an experienced and reliable Senior Bookkeeper to take ownership of the day-to-day finance function across our small group of businesses operating within wholesale, e-commerce and commercial property.
This is a hands-on role for somebody who is comfortable working independently, taking responsibility for the finance function and communicating directly with directors, staff, customers, suppliers and our external accountants.
The finance function has recently been brought back in-house following a period of outsourced bookkeeping, and we are transitioning our accounting systems from Merlin to Xero.
The role is approximately 15–20 hours per week.
We are genuinely flexible about how those hours are structured and are happy to accommodate other commitments. However, we would ideally agree a reasonably consistent pattern of core working hours each week, with flexibility to move hours around when required.
Hybrid working is available, although some attendance at our offices near Taunton will be required.
Responsibilities
- Day-to-day bookkeeping across the group
- Purchase ledger processing and supplier payment runs
- Accounts receivable and credit control
- Bank and credit card reconciliations
- Cash flow management and forecasting
- Payroll and workplace pension administration
- Preparation and submission of quarterly VAT returns
- Postponed VAT Accounting
- Month-end processes and journals
- Maintaining accurate accounting records
- Producing regular management information and finance reports
- Foreign currency transactions and payments
- Reconciliation of e-commerce and payment channels
- Liaising with our external accountants
- Supporting the transition from Merlin to Xero
- Maintaining clear finance procedures and records
Our Businesses
The role covers a small group of related businesses operating across:
- Wholesale and distribution
- E-commerce, including Amazon, eBay, Etsy, Shopify and Wayfair
- Commercial property
Our stock and purchasing operations are moving to Linnworks, while Xero will become the primary accounting platform.
What We’re Looking For
- At least 5 years’ bookkeeping/accounts experience
- Strong practical knowledge of Xero
- Experience preparing VAT returns
- Payroll and workplace pension experience
- Confident managing purchase and sales ledgers
- Strong bank reconciliation skills
- Comfortable working independently and taking ownership
- Confident communicating with customers and suppliers
- Highly organised with excellent attention to detail
- Comfortable working directly with business owners/directors
Experience with e-commerce, foreign currency transactions, imports or wholesale businesses would be advantageous but isn’t essential.
Formal accounting qualifications are welcome but practical bookkeeping experience and the ability to take ownership of the role are more important to us.
The Role Would Suit Someone Who
Is looking for a stable, permanent part-time position rather than freelance or ad-hoc bookkeeping work.
You may already have another part-time role or other commitments and be looking for approximately 15–20 hours of consistent work each week.
We’re happy to offer genuine flexibility around working hours, provided we can establish a broadly consistent weekly pattern that works for both you and the business.
