The Finance Business Partner (FBP) acts as the interface between enterprise financial objectives and the performance of their business area, ensuring decisions are informed, aligned and value-driven. Working alongside senior stakeholders, the FBP is accountable for ensuring robust financial governance and assurance, compliance with financial standards, and delivering clear, actionable information to support decision-making. By maintaining a close working relationship with business leaders, the FBP is highly influential in ensuring that financial performance aligns with organisational goals, driving continuous improvement in financial processes and business outcomes.
- Business partnering: build trusted relationships with senior leaders; translate complex financial and non-financial information to provide clear, actionable insight and constructive challenge on budgets, forecasts, risks and opportunities.
- Act as a trusted adviser, delivering clear financial guidance & decision support: Support business decisions, including but not limited to; investment choices, management of funding and forecasts, budget adherence, financial performance.
- Provide financial assurance and constructive challenge to maintain the integrity of financial processes and ensure compliance with accounting standards and internal financial policies.
- Lead and implement departmental improvement initiatives, enhancing processes, systems, and ways of working to support better decision-making.
- Engage with cross-functional teams to ensure financial alignment with broader business objectives, offering challenge and support where necessary.
- Analysis and interpretation of complex financial data, providing senior leaders with clear, actionable insights to inform decisions. (Supported by standard suite of reports and metrics provided by Business Performance & Analysis department).
- Provide training and guidance to non-financial colleagues on financial matters, ensuring a clear understanding of financial performance, budgeting, and forecasting to support broader business objectives.
- Maintain continued professional development (CPD) to stay up to date with financial regulations and best practices, ensuring the business benefits from the latest financial expertise and insights.
Essential Skills:
- Chartered accountant qualification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA).
- Strong communicator: An ability to present complex financial information clearly and effectively to non-financial colleagues.
- Well-developed influencing and interpersonal skills: Required to present financial solutions and recommendations to senior stakeholders.
- Knowledge of the Business and its operations.
- Knowledge of Financial policies and procedures: In-depth knowledge of financial concepts, budgeting, forecasting, and cost management processes.
- Problem-solving skills: The ability to develop creative and effective solutions for business and financial challenges.
- Strong understanding of earned value and performance analysis metrics.
- IT Proficiency: Strong understanding of financial systems, with proficiency in SAP, Power BI and the full Microsoft Office suite.
Desirable Skills:
- Coaching and management skills: Experience in managing, coaching and developing finance teams to achieve high performance (in positions where line management is a requirement).
- Leadership skills: Proven experience in providing financial leadership and influencing decision-making.
- Experience in a large, complex organisation, ideally within the public or highly regulated sector.
