JOB TITLE: NDT Technician
REPORTS TO: Product and Process Technologist
BUSINESS: William Rowland Metal Finishing
FUNCTION: Quality/Technical
BACKGROUND
An exciting opportunity within a long established (1940) metals treatment and processing company. William Rowland Metal Finishing (WRMF) is part of the wider William Rowland/AMC Group of companies based in South Yorkshire.
Our business specialises in chemical etching, phosphating, pickling & passivating, and inspection of components. WRMF processes components for use within high-integrity sectors such as Aerospace, Energy, and Automotive.
Following a recent relocation to larger premises and ongoing investment in the business, WRMF is entering a new phase of growth. This role offers the opportunity to contribute directly to the development of new processes and capabilities.
We are looking for a highly motivated and proactive individual to carry out inspection and testing activities, supporting product quality and compliance within the business. This is a days-based role with no shift work.
1. PURPOSE OF JOB
To perform and evaluate Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) activities, specifically Dye Penetrant Testing and Macro Examination, to ensure components meet customer, regulatory, and internal quality requirements. The role provides independent verification of product integrity, supporting compliance with Nadcap and OEM standards (such as Rolls-Royce, GE Avio, and Lycoming).
The role offers the opportunity to develop additional NDT competencies (e.g. Magnetic Particle Inspection, Ultrasonic Testing) in line with business needs, with progression in responsibility as skills develop.
2. PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES
Perform Dye Penetrant Testing (PT) on aerospace components in accordance with approved internal procedures and customer specifications (e.g. Rolls-Royce RPS, GE, Lycoming).
Prepare, etch, and evaluate micro and macro examination samples to assess metallurgical structure against defined acceptance criteria.
Accurately interpret and disposition inspection results, clearly identifying defects and reporting accordingly.
Complete all inspection records and documentation in line with Nadcap, AS9100, and customer requirements.
Ensure all NDT equipment, chemicals, and consumables are controlled, within calibration, and compliant with specification requirements.
Support internal, customer, and third-party audits, providing evidence of compliance and participating in corrective actions where required.
Adhere to and promote health, safety, and environmental standards.
Work collaboratively with production, technical teams, and customers to support investigation of defects and continuous improvement of processes.
Assist in the development, review, and improvement of NDT procedures and work instructions.
Maintain certification and competency in accordance with PCN / EN 4179 requirements, including ongoing training and recertification.
Provide guidance or mentoring to trainee or Level 1 NDT personnel where required.
When NDT workload permits, provide support to other operational and quality-related activities across the business (e.g. chemical processing, effluent treatment, laboratory titration), contributing to overall process control, compliance, and continuous improvement.
3. VISION & CONTEXT
Operating within a Nadcap-accredited metal finishing environment, this role supports the delivery of high-integrity components used in critical applications, such as aerospace and defence, across global OEM platforms.
4. KEY CONTACTS
Product & Process Technologist (Quality/Technical): Day-to-day reporting line, technical support, and escalation of inspection or metallurgical issues.
Compliance & Production Manager (Operations): Coordination of inspection activities with production schedules and communication of non-conformances impacting delivery and product conformity.
Responsible Level 3 (NDT Consultant): Technical authority for NDT methods, including procedure approval, qualification and certification oversight, audit support, and escalation of complex or ambiguous inspection results.
Customer Representatives: Interaction during audits, source inspections, and technical discussions relating to NDT compliance and results.
Accreditation Bodies: Demonstration of process compliance and participation in accreditation audits.
NDT Equipment & Consumable Suppliers: Technical support, calibration services, and compliance of materials and equipment.
5. KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE
Essential
Proven experience performing Dye Penetrant Testing (PT) within a manufacturing environment, ideally on castings and/or forgings.
PCN Level 2 or EN 4179 Level 2 certification in Dye Penetrant Testing (PT).
Practical experience in Macro Examination, including sample preparation, etching, and interpretation of metallurgical features.
Good understanding of aerospace quality standards, including Nadcap and AS9100 requirements.
Ability to interpret engineering drawings, material specifications, and customer requirements.
Experience in identifying and evaluating surface defects and material discontinuities.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to produce accurate and traceable inspection records.
Desirable
Experience working to OEM specifications such as Rolls-Royce, GE Avio, or Lycoming requirements.
Additional NDT qualifications (e.g. Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT)).
Experience within a metal finishing, foundry, or forging environment.
Basic understanding of metallurgy or material science principles.
Familiarity with Nadcap audit processes and customer audit expectations.
