Thank you for taking the time to read about this new opportunity with Pipe Ten based in the heart of Sheffield at the quirky area that is Kelham Island!
Have you heard of Pipe Ten? If not, this might just be the opportunity you’ve been looking for.
- Are you someone who is naturally curious about technology and always wanting to understand how things work?
- Have you spent time outside of work or education building PCs, creating home labs, experimenting with networking or setting up your own projects?
- Are you looking for a genuine junior opportunity where you can learn from experienced engineers and build a long-term career within infrastructure and cloud engineering?
- Would you love a role that combines hands-on hardware work with cloud infrastructure, security and modern technologies?
- Do you want to be part of a small but highly experienced team where attitude and curiosity matter more than ticking every technical box?
If you’re reading this thinking “yes, that sounds like me”, then keep reading - this could be the perfect next step for you.
Who are Pipe Ten?
Pipe Ten are a Sheffield-based managed hosting and infrastructure provider working with customers across fintech, edtech and other high-assurance industries.
For over 20 years they’ve been helping businesses run secure, high-performance infrastructure and applications, with a strong focus on reliability, security and long-term partnerships.
They’re a small but highly skilled team who genuinely enjoy technology and love sharing knowledge. Pipe Ten are proud of the supportive culture they’ve built, where people are encouraged to learn, ask questions and develop their skills over time.
This is not the type of business where you’ll be left doing the same repetitive tasks every day. The team works across cloud infrastructure, data centres, endpoint security, monitoring, patching and customer environments - meaning there is huge opportunity to learn and grow.
What might a typical week look like?
This is a deliberately broad and hands-on junior engineering role where no two weeks will look exactly the same.
- You’ll spend time supporting experienced engineers while gradually building your own technical knowledge and confidence.
- Some of the things you may get involved in include:
- Supporting the management and monitoring of cloud infrastructure environments
- Working with Linux and Windows based systems
- Assisting with patching, monitoring and infrastructure maintenance
- Supporting customer tickets and helping troubleshoot technical issues
- Carrying out physical data centre work including racking, cabling and hardware lifecycle tasks
- Supporting endpoint security and infrastructure reliability
- Learning more about Azure, AWS and private cloud environments
- Contributing to internal documentation and knowledge sharing
- Developing your technical knowledge through hands-on learning and training opportunities
During your first month, you’ll mainly be office-based whilst onboarding and learning the environment. Following onboarding, the role will move into a hybrid working setup, however this is not a fully remote role and there will still be an expectation to attend the Sheffield office regularly to work alongside the wider team and collaborate in person.
Who might be an ideal candidate?
We’re genuinely open-minded on background for this role.
You might be:
- A graduate who has completed a placement year or has personal projects outside of university
- Someone working in a junior IT support or technical role looking to move more into infrastructure and cloud engineering
- Someone who has built home labs, networks, servers or personal tech projects in your own time
- A naturally curious problem solver who enjoys learning and experimenting with technology
- Someone who enjoys both the technical and practical side of IT - including hands-on hardware work
You do not need to know everything already.
Pipe Ten are far more interested in finding someone with the right attitude, curiosity and willingness to learn than someone who already has years of experience.
What’s important for this role?
To be successful in this opportunity, you will ideally have:
- A genuine interest in infrastructure, systems or cloud technologies
- Some exposure to Linux, Windows Server or command-line environments
- A basic understanding of networking concepts such as IP addressing or DNS
- A willingness to learn and ask questions
- A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
- The ability to commute regularly to Sheffield and data centre locations in Derby and Manchester when needed
- It would also be beneficial, but not essential, if you have:
- Any exposure to scripting, Azure, AWS, monitoring tools or endpoint security
- Familiarity or interest in AI tools, emerging technologies or how AI is beginning to shape modern infrastructure and engineering environments
Why join Pipe Ten?
- Genuine junior opportunity with development and training support
- Opportunity to grow into cloud engineering over time
- Small, experienced and supportive team
- Exposure to modern infrastructure environments and technologies
- Varied role combining cloud, infrastructure and hands-on engineering
- Long-standing and stable business with strong staff retention
- Flexible and hybrid working approach after onboarding
If you’re reading this and wondering whether you’re experienced enough, please do apply.
Pipe Ten are much more interested in finding the right person with the right mindset than someone who perfectly matches every technical requirement.
Sometimes the best engineers are the people who are constantly learning, experimenting and asking questions.
