Overview
The School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences is seeking to appoint a Research Associate. This post is funded by an EPSRC Grant `Sharifi conjecture for Bianchi 3-manifolds’ held by Dr Tobias Berger and is fixed term for 36 months. The project is developing new tools in the deformation theory of residually reducible Galois representations and studying the cohomology of Bianchi 3-folds using algebraic K-theory in order to prove Sharifi’s conjecture, one of the key open problems in the Langlands programme. Details of the project can be found at http://tberger.staff.shef.ac.uk/
Working alongside 6 academic staff in algebraic number theory specializing in the Langlands programme will provide you with a stimulating environment to develop a successful research career. Funds will be available for professional development, such as conference participations and research visits.
You should have a PhD in a relevant area of pure mathematics (or equivalent experience). We are looking for someone with a strong background in algebraic number theory or arithmetic algebraic geometry, with expertise to include some of the following: Cohomology of arithmetic groups, algebraic K-theory, and deformations of Galois representations.
Main duties and responsibilities
Contribute to and support the work of the research group (e.g. by giving and attending local working seminars and participating in collaborations).
Prepare high-quality research publications.
Prepare papers for journals / presentations either in-house or at national/international conferences to disseminate research findings.
Attend international conferences, and give talks on the work of the research group.
Read academic papers, journals and text books to keep abreast of developments and use this information to brief colleagues and inform the work of the project.
This is not a teaching role, however teaching experience may be available if the successful candidate is interested in gaining some teaching experience. This will be dependent upon opportunities being available within the department.
As a member of staff you will be encouraged to make ethical decisions in your role, embedding the University sustainability strategy into your working activities wherever possible.
Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post

Even if your past experience doesn't match perfectly with this role's criteria, your contribution is valuable, and we encourage you to apply. Please ensure that you reference the application criteria in the application statement when you apply.
A good honours degree (or equivalent experience) in a discipline related to the project.

Expertise in algebraic number theory or arithmetic algebraic geometry and in any of the following areas:
- Cohomology of arithmetic groups
- Deformations of Galois representations
Experience of postdoctoral research
Interpersonal skills to conduct effective working relationships.
Experience of report writing, giving presentations and writing research publications for peer-reviewed journals.
Ability to work well independently, as well as effectively as part of a team.
