Full job description

Role Overview The candidate should have experience of tutoring at different levels across a range of subjects and can bring an added dimension to the core Preparation for Adulthood curriculum here at ROC.

This role requires a strong commitment to safeguarding, inclusion, and the holistic wellbeing of all students.

We are seeking a dedicated and adaptable Tutor to join our specialist independent college, supporting students with diverse educational needs. The successful candidate will deliver high-quality, personalised teaching and learning, helping students achieve their academic, social, and personal development goals in a safe and supportive environment.

Key Responsibilities

Teaching and Learning

Plan, prepare, and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons tailored to individual student needs.

Teach consistently good or better lessons and ensure high standards for teaching and learning.

To effectively plan lessons that are stimulating, relevant and well-structured to a wide range of abilities including social, emotional and communication needs to ensure all students can participate and reach their full potential.

Ensure that high quality, appropriate schemes of work and assessment strategies are in place for all students.

Keep up to date with and respond to national developments in teaching practice and methodology

To ensure that all learning equipment and resources are in good order and available for the delivery of lesson

Support students with a range of abilities and special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

Establish projects within the college environment/community.

Monitor, assess, and record student progress, adapting teaching strategies accordingly.

Promote independence, confidence, and employability skills in learners.

Organise a person-centered learning environment allowing students to take ownership of their learning and ambitions

Collaboration and Professional Practice

Work as part of a multidisciplinary team, contributing to meetings, reviews, and college development.
Maintain accurate records and documentation in line with college requirements.
Engage in ongoing professional development and training, particularly in safeguarding and SEND.
Attend parents/carers progress events.

Safeguarding and Student Welfare

Maintain a strong awareness of safeguarding responsibilities and adhere to all safeguarding policies and procedures.
Recognise and respond appropriately to safeguarding concerns, reporting them in line with organisational procedures.
Promote a safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environment.
Work collaboratively with safeguarding leads, support staff, and external agencies where required.

Risk Assessment and Health & Safety

Conduct and regularly review risk assessments for learning activities, environments, and individual students where necessary.
Ensure all teaching activities comply with health and safety regulations.
Identify potential hazards and implement appropriate control measures to minimise risk.
Support students in understanding and managing risk appropriately.

Student Support and Engagement

Build positive, professional relationships with students to support engagement and attendance.
Provide pastoral support and guidance, responding to individual needs sensitively.
Work closely with families, carers, and external professionals to support student outcomes.
Promote good student behaviour, dealing promptly with conflict and incidents in line with established policy and encourage students to take responsibility for their own behaviour.

Essential:

Experience of teaching or tutoring (formal or informal settings).
Ability to differentiate teaching to meet diverse learner needs. Understanding of safeguarding principles and procedures.
Experience working with young people or adults with additional needs.
Ability to carry out and apply risk assessments effectively.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Desirable:

Teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, CertEd or DET).
Experience in a specialist or alternative education setting.
Knowledge of SEND frameworks and strategies.
First Aid or relevant health and safety training.
