Job Description

The salary for this role is £57,117 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected for 3 days each week with the possibility of increasing to up to 5 days per week depending on the nature of the project and work requirements, however, we actively support requests for flexible working.

This role is based at the following site: Culham, Oxfordshire

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.

The Role

Are you looking for an opportunity to shape the future of fusion energy? Join us as a Senior Electrical Power Engineer, where you’ll guide major high-voltage network projects and help steer some of the most ambitious programmes in the field. You’ll bring deep specialist expertise to complex technical challenges, providing authoritative direction on system designs, solutions, and critical plant operations. In this role, you’ll define, lead, and deliver large-scale initiatives ranging from enhancement programmes to next-generation fusion devices and high-power computing infrastructure, while mentoring project teams and setting the technical course in your discipline.

Key Accountabilities:

- Design, build, commission and test major LV/HV networks, and carry out studies such as power flow, protection and system commissioning.
- Lead significant work packages, act as Project Engineer (and occasionally Project Manager), and ensure compliance with legislation, codes of practice and CDM.
- Manage delivery of assigned projects, controlling budgets, meeting milestones and producing required technical documentation.
- Provide high-voltage consultancy (at either 11kV, 33kV, 132kV and 400kV), operate LV/HV switchgear, and apply national network policies, including HV/LV metering requirements.
- Prepare engineering procedures, risk assessments and method statements, while supervising multidisciplinary teams and contractors supporting UKAEA operations.

Qualifications

Essential:

A relevant electrical engineering degree or equivalent.
Incorporated/Chartered Engineer status with a suitable professional institution or actively working towards this.
Competent in the use of analysis software, such as ETAP, to support design studies at a HV Network level.
Good communication and technical writing skills.

Desired:

Proven capability in engineering analysis and a good working knowledge of engineering materials and their properties.
Experience in HV voltage at either of levels 11kV, 33kV, 132kV and 400kV.
Capable of using first engineering principles.
Experience of bespoke HV earthing calculation and installation.
Leading teams and supervising other staff.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
