Consultant /Criminal Duty Solicitor

Location: In person – London, SE16 2XB

Opportunity

We are seeking an experienced Consultant/ Criminal Duty Solicitor to join our firm and lead the development of a Criminal Law Department within our growing practice.

This role is ideal for a qualified Criminal Duty Solicitor looking for autonomy, flexibility, and the opportunity to deliver high-quality criminal defence services while helping to establish and grow a criminal department.

Role Overview

The successful consultant will provide expert legal advice and representation in criminal matters, attending police stations and courts, and managing a caseload independently with minimal supervision.

Key Duties & Responsibilities

Provide clear, accurate, and competent legal advice to clients on criminal matters.
Attend police stations as a Criminal Duty Solicitor.
Represent clients in the Magistrates’ Court
Conduct advocacy, negotiations, and hearings as required.
Draft and prepare legal documents including:
Case notes and representations
Statements and applications
Court documents and bundles
Manage a caseload independently and efficiently.
Ensure compliance with Legal Aid Agency (LAA) requirements and deadlines.
Maintain organised case files in line with regulatory standards.
Conduct legal research and remain up to date with criminal law and procedure.
Communicate effectively with clients in person, by telephone, email, and video conferencing.
Liaise with courts, police, counsel, and other relevant parties.
Assist in the development and growth of the firm’s criminal law services.

Essential Qualifications

Qualified Solicitor of England and Wales
Criminal Duty Solicitor Accreditation
Police Station Accreditation
Registered with the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA)

Experience & Knowledge

Proven experience in criminal defence work
Experience attending police stations and courts
Knowledge of Legal Aid provision in criminal matters
Experience managing files independently with minimal supervision
Familiarity with LAA compliance and procedures
Experience using case management systems (CLIO experience advantageous)

Ability to work under pressure and prioritise workload
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Self-motivated with a flexible and proactive approach
Ability to work independently and use initiative
High standards of professionalism, ethics, and confidentiality
