Job overview

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic HCPC-registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist in bacteriology.

This is a role to support the bacteriology diagnostic laboratory. The successful candidate is expected to have experience in an NHS diagnostic bacteriology laboratory. You will be required to participate in weekend working, late shifts and night shifts.

Candidates that do not have a Specialist Portfolio but are working to complete the portfolio, will be considered and if successful and will commence working as a Band 5 until they have completed the portfolio.

The department provides an extensive range of investigations to support the specialist patient population of this tertiary referral paediatric hospital, and also provides a specialist service to other hospitals. This is an excellent opportunity to work as part of a very experienced and dedicated team to gain extra skills and knowledge of paediatric microbiology.

This is a vibrant, progressive, well equipped, and a ISO15189 accredited laboratory.

Main duties of the job

To select and perform appropriate laboratory investigations on patient samples as requested by the clinical services or determined by a review of clinical details
Take responsibility for the quality and accuracy of the results produced
Enter and validate laboratory results produced by themselves or other laboratory staff members
To validate ,authorise and report results of investigations, to interpret results to assist diagnosis
To report and discuss all quality and other issues with senior members of staff
To assist in the training and supervision of Medical Laboratory assistants
To assist in the training of medical staff

Knowledge of the day to day running of a diagnostic laboratory
