About the Role
Study Mind is looking for a compassionate and experienced SEN Tutor to support a Year 4 pupil through a bespoke emotional regulation and self-esteem programme within his mainstream primary school.
Rather than focusing on academic intervention, this placement is designed to help the student develop the emotional regulation skills, confidence and resilience needed to access learning successfully within the classroom.
This is a highly rewarding opportunity for someone who understands that strong relationships and emotional wellbeing are the foundation of educational success.
About the Student
Our student is a bright and thoughtful Year 4 learner who is currently on the neurodevelopmental assessment pathway.
When calm, he has an excellent understanding of emotions and can discuss strategies that help him regulate. However, when he becomes overwhelmed, he finds it difficult to apply these strategies independently and requires a calm, supportive adult to help him regain regulation.
The overall aim is to strengthen his confidence, emotional awareness and readiness for learning, enabling him to remain successfully engaged within his mainstream classroom.
The Role Will Include:-
- Delivering a personalised 1:1 emotional regulation programme.
- Supporting self-esteem, resilience and confidence.
- Helping the student recognise and manage early signs of dysregulation.
- Using creative, practical and visual activities to develop emotional awareness.
- Building trust through a calm, consistent and relationship-led approach.
- Providing structured progress updates to the school and Local Authority.
The Ideal Tutor Will Have Experience Supporting Children With
- SEMH needs
- Emotional regulation difficulties
- Anxiety and dysregulation
- Autism or children on the neurodevelopmental pathway
- ADHD or attention difficulties
- Social and emotional development
- Primary-aged pupils within mainstream settings
Experience delivering ELSA-style interventions, nurture programmes, therapeutic mentoring or emotional literacy support would be highly advantageous.
Student Interests
Building rapport through the student's interests will be an important part of the role.
He enjoys:
- LEGO and construction activities
- Watching vehicle and car repair videos
- Water-based activities
- Arts and crafts
- Bracelet making
- Practical, hands-on learning
Teaching Approach
The successful tutor will:
- Prioritise trust and relationship-building before introducing challenge.
- Use visual supports, modelling and practical activities throughout sessions.
- Maintain a calm, predictable and low-arousal learning environment.
- Recognise dysregulation as communication rather than challenging behaviour.
- Use co-regulation strategies rather than compliance-based approaches.
- Reduce demands when needed before gently returning to learning.
- Help the student gradually recognise his own emotional cues and regulation needs.

We're seeking a tutor who is:
- Patient, nurturing and emotionally attuned.
- Experienced supporting children with SEMH and emotional regulation needs.
- Confident using visual and practical learning approaches.
- Skilled at building positive, trusting relationships.
- Calm under pressure and able to adapt sessions to the student's presentation.
- Passionate about helping children develop confidence and resilience.
A female tutor is preferred for this placement.
Tuition Details
Location:
Face-to-face, in-school tuition in Peterborough (PE3) within a calm, low-arousal space.
Hours:
- 3 hours per week
- 1-hour sessions across 3 days
- School timetable to be agreed
Start Date:
September 2026
Initial Placement:
6-week programme, with written progress reviews provided to the school and Local Authority.
