About the role

We are looking for an experienced Postdoctoral Researcher to engineer bio-based materials to join the synthetic biology research group of Professor Tom Ellis in the Department of Bioengineering, Imperial College London.

What you would be doing

This role will work on using resources from environmental microbiology to generate bio-based materials for use in the application of new materials for future consumer goods.

You will develop microbial growth systems and synthetic biology tools to engineer microbes to make and secrete modified and functional biomaterials that interact with AI-designed, 3D-printed materials. You will be part of a project with a team of researchers with expertise in design, machine learning and materials development who are based across multiple departments at Imperial College London.

You will need to use state of the art techniques in engineered living materials (ELMs) and technologies like additive manufacturing and will need to make rapid progress over a short timescale to be able to feed results into the work done by the rest of the interdisciplinary team

What we are looking for

The role requires an experienced postdoc who has already worked in the field who can hit the ground running. You should have a PhD in bio-based materials for appointment at Research Associate level and have published work on generating new materials by engineering microbes that make bio-based polymers.

It is essential that you have demonstrated lab experience with bacterial cellulose, melanin, fungal-made biopolymers, 3D additive manufacturing, spore-forming microbes and design prototyping. Publications demonstrating experience in Living Materials are essential.

Further information

This is a full-time fixed-term contract for 12 months.
