We are looking for a confident, motivated and forward-thinking Principal Environmental Health Officer to lead our Food Safety / Health & Safety Team.
The Team:
The Food Safety / Health & Safety Team is a busy front-line service responsible for the delivery of the food safety, food hygiene rating scheme, communicable disease investigation, health & safety regulation of businesses and special procedures licensing functions.
The Role:
As the Principal Environmental Health Officer, you will provide operational leadership, supervision and professional support to the team, ensuring statutory duties are delivered effectively and in accordance with relevant legislation, codes of practice and corporate priorities.
You will oversee complex investigations, enforcement activity, service planning and performance management, working collaboratively with colleagues, partners, businesses and the public. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys problem solving, leading by example and making a visible difference in the community.
What you will do:
- Provide professional and technical leadership.
- Manage complex casework, investigations and enforcement activity in line with legislation, policy and best practice.
- Support service planning, performance monitoring, risk management and continuous improvement.
- Advise colleagues, senior officers, elected members, businesses and the public on environmental health matters.
- Help to develop policies, procedures and working practices that support effective service delivery.
- Supervise, mentor and support officers within the team, promoting high standards and professional development.
- Build strong working relationships with internal services, external agencies and partner organisations.
- Represent the service at meetings, hearings, working groups and other forums.
About you:
The successful candidate will have excellent leadership, communication and organisational skills, together with experience in environmental health regulation, particularly within food safety and health and safety, and experience of leading and developing staff.
We are looking for someone with strong professional knowledge, sound judgement and the ability to manage competing priorities in a busy regulatory environment. You will be confident in making evidence-based decisions, communicating clearly with a wide range of people and supporting others to deliver excellent services.
