Full job description

We are looking for an HCPC registered Practitioner Psychologist to join our Inpatient Dementia ward. Preceptorships are possible, as well as applications from those with post-qualification experience in this specialty, or those looking for a change.

The role is interesting and varied, working with people with dementia of all ages, often with a complex range of physical health needs and sometimes with overlapping additional complex mental health needs.

You will be joining a growing Psychology team within the Dementia and Older Person’s Mental Health (DOPMH) Services. You will be encouraged to develop and maintain relationships with colleagues both within the inpatient and crisis service line, and across community services to support continuity of clinical care and for professional development and support. For example, you will have the opportunity to connect with colleagues from the other acute mental health wards and the range of DOPMH community mental health teams. You will be supported to make close links with Psychology counterparts on Cove Ward (older person’s mental health ward) and with those working in the community into dementia care homes.

We’re an NHS community and mental health provider Trust based in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly. We deliver community and hospital-based care to improve people’s physical and mental health. We also provide specialist support to people with dementia or a learning disability.

Over 5,000 people make up the Trust. This includes doctors, nurses, therapists, plus admin and support staff.

We work in people’s homes, in community clinics and bases. Some staff work from one of our 10 community hospitals. Our aspiration is to have great people, provide great care, be a great place to work and a great partner.

Approximately 568,000 people live here. A third of people who live in Cornwall are supported by acute hospital services in Devon. As a result, we also work closely with our partners in Devon. In the summer, and during other holidays lots of people choose to visit the area. This increase the numbers of people who use out services.

We are committed to continuing professional development, with options to attend regular supervision groups or CPD, including for Neuropsychology and the Supporting Behaviour Pathway. You would be supported to pursue further training depending on your interests. For example, we have supported staff members to undertake Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology training and to become a Multi-Professional Approved Clinician.

We have strong links with the Clinical Psychology training courses at Plymouth University, regularly hosting Trainee Clinical Psychologists and Trainee Clinical Associates in Psychology. There are also opportunities to host placements as part of the Undergraduate Psychology Intern programme and therefore there will be opportunities to provide supervision and have support with planning, offering and evaluating interventions.

Cornwall is a beautiful and picturesque county which offers an outstanding quality of life and provides many opportunities for outdoor activities, with its sailing waters, surfing beaches and rugged coastal pathways for walking, running, and cycling. There is a thriving arts and theatre scene as well as an interesting variety of eating places, including nationally renowned restaurants. The major route in and out of the county is the recently improved A30 which connects with the M5 motorway at Exeter. The rail service has daily passenger and sleeper services and there are airports at Newquay and Exeter with daily connections to many cities throughout the UK and abroad.
