Plant Fitter (HGV Mechanic)

About Connor (South West) Construction Ltd

Connor Construction (South West) Ltd offers one of the widest and most advanced service ranges in the Highways and Road Construction industry, powered by a substantial fleet of specialist vehicles and high‑performance plant. This includes Volvo Pavers, Road Planers, JCB Streetmasters, Tanker Sprayers, Skidsteers, Chippers, Rollers of all sizes, Volvo Low-Loaders, 6- and 8-Wheeler Tippers, and custom-designed Welfare Vans. As a Workshop Fitter, you’ll be responsible for the daily maintenance, servicing, and emergency repair of this fleet, both in the workshop and on site.

Key Responsibilities:

Carry out routine servicing and repairs on HGVs and plant machinery
Attend breakdowns and perform emergency repairs on site when required
Conduct diagnostic testing and fault-finding to identify root causes
Replace damaged or defective components and fabricate parts when necessary
Road test vehicles to ensure operational safety and performance
Accurately record maintenance, servicing, and repair activities
Liaise with operations, transport, and site teams to coordinate repairs
Ensure all work is carried out in line with safety regulations and PPE requirements
Remove defective tools, vehicles, or equipment from service immediately
Report near misses and contribute to a safety-first culture

What We’re Looking For:

We’re seeking a skilled and proactive HGV Fitter with experience maintaining a varied fleet of heavy vehicles and construction plant. You’ll be confident working independently and as part of a team, with strong diagnostic skills and a commitment to safety and service excellence. Experience with Volvo Pavers, Road Planers, and hydraulic systems is highly desirable but not essential.

Salary & Benefits:

A competitive salary is offered from £50,000 basic (depending on experience) plus overtime and call out, company van with opportunities for training and career progression.
