Brook Food is the UK and Europe's largest provider of new, used, and refurbished bakery and food manufacturing equipment. It maintains a substantial machinery inventory (over 3,000 asset pieces), processing units, and engineering services.
Position Overview
The Financial / Commercial Controller will take full ownership of day-to-day accounting operations while serving as a strategic business partner to senior leadership. This role balances rigorous financial control, ensuring compliance, managing risk, and maintaining data integrity with deep commercial insight and proven project leadership. You will turn operational and market data into actionable strategies, spearhead cross-functional business initiatives, and optimize margins across our equipment sales, hire contracts, servicing, and manufacturing operations.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Control & Reporting
- Process Ownership: Manage and execute month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes to ensure accurate, timely corporate reporting.
- Strategic Insights: Prepare comprehensive monthly management accounts and board packs with robust variance analysis and operational commentaries.
- Data Integrity: Maintain absolute oversight of the general ledger, balance sheet reconciliations, and internal control frameworks.
- Team Leadership: Supervise, mentor, and build the capabilities of the internal transaction and credit control team.
- Forward Planning: Coordinate annual budgeting cycles and rolling quarterly cash flow and revenue re-forecasting.
- Compliance & Audit: Oversee statutory and tax compliance (VAT, PAYE, corporate tax) and act as the primary project lead for external audits.
Commercial Finance & Project Leadership
- Margin Strategy: Lead detailed product costing analysis and structure customer margin frameworks for new, used, and refurbished machinery lines.
- Deal Structuring: Partner with commercial and sales executives to steer high-value business tenders, contract negotiations, and multi-tier pricing strategies.
- Asset Management: Maintain deep understanding of inventory lifecycles, leading stock valuations, tracking obsolescence risks, and optimizing working capital.
- Financial Products: Support the delivery, risk management, and scaling of bespoke asset finance solutions offered to clients.
- Systems Transformation: Act as the principal project manager and stakeholder for ERP/accounting system enhancements, driving operational efficiencies by leveraging data analytics.
- Cross-Functional Initiatives: Orchestrate change-management projects across engineering, sales, and operations to streamline workflow profitability and cost-control frameworks.
Candidate Requirements
Qualifications and Experience
- Credentials: Fully qualified accountant (ACCA, CIMA, or ACA) with strong post-qualification experience.
- Sector Expertise: Proven track record as a Financial Controller, Finance Manager, or Commercial Finance Lead within manufacturing, distribution, or engineering/machinery.
- Inventory Knowledge: Demonstrated experience managing physical inventory, stock valuations, and standard costing structures.
- People Management: Success in managing, mentoring, and developing small to medium-sized finance teams.
- Project Delivery: Demonstrated experience leading financial and operational projects, such as ERP implementations, process mapping, or structural system changes.
Skills and Attributes
- Technical Savvy: Advanced analytical capability with high-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel and modern cloud-based ERP systems.
- Execution Focus: Strong commercial acumen with the ability to look past numbers to influence strategy and drive project delivery execution.
- Communication: Exceptional leadership capability to manage, motivate, and align cross-functional teams toward project milestones.
Pay: £60,000.00-£80,000.00 per year
