Scope
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a gardener and landscaping operative at Radbroke Campus. The site is home to Barclays technology centre and situated close to Knutsford. The site supports over two thousand colleagues per day.
The campus primarily contains woodlands, hedges, gardens, lawns, sports turf and ponds. Lead by the Grounds Manager and reporting to the Grounds Supervisor this position provides an exciting opportunity to enhance the grounds thought the enhancement of the rose garden, planting of wildflowers and meadows, new woodland garden, woodland management, pond maintenance and collaboration with NGOs.
The aim is to maintain the grounds to the highest possible standards providing a safe and stimulating environment which supports both colleagues and biodiversity. The grounds team support Radbroke’s ambition to become a world class campus through effective delivery and alignment with professional standards. The postholder will be supported and guided by the Grounds Manager who will encourage training and development to continually reach high standards required.
The postholder must be capable of working both autonomously and in a team using the very best horticultural and ground maintenance skills, promoting positivity and enthusiasm. Post holder must also lead in the setting of high standards. Preferably the post holder will have demonstrable experience in the horticultural industry having worked in a HNW garden or prestigious setting. You will need to hold formal horticultural qualifications and tickets as outlined although significant experience may be considered. You will show an aptitude for continued learning and development, suggesting new ideas and driving change. As part of this role you will develop skills in sports turf, and woodland management; skills in these areas will be an advantage.
You will enjoy working in all weathers while fostering team support and collaboration. You will take pride in your work while enhancing the gardens, supporting biodiversity and colleague experience.
Key Responsibilities
You will be required to positively contribute to the ongoing Grounds maintenance at Radbroke Campus. This will include the following
· The Mowing of lawns and their annual maintenance
· Maintaining hedges by trimming and renovation
· Maintaining shrubs to promote health and flowering
· Maintenance of woodland which will include clearing, planting and promoting biodiversity
· Maintenance of gardens to high horticultural standards, knowledge of pruning techniques and washdown procedures.
· Basic Landscaping such as laying astroturf
· Use of herbicides to control weeds.
· Willingness to learn and engage in training
· Gritting as required
· Litter picking as required
· Willingness to follow and promote health and safety which will include vehicle checks
· You will ideally be experienced in the maintenance of high profile gardens and estates comfortable to engage stakeholders and provide efficient and memorable interactions
· Willingness to learn about sports turf
· Willingness to progress to become future leader
· Willingness to work towards health and safety qualifications
Qualifications
· RHS Level 2/3 or NVQ Level 2/3 in horticulture and/or 3 years minimum working in a horticultural setting with demonstrable experience. Experience may be working in a large private garden, Local authority or Landscaping firm.
· You must have the ability to identify a range of plants
· You must have the ability to identify the specific needs of plants which support optimal growth and display. This will include identifying pests and diseases, pruning and maintenance requirements.
Mowing of Lawns / Sport Turf areas
· Must have proven ability to operate a variety of lawnmowers which include rotary and cylinder. Must have ability to use strimmer’s and brush cutters. Must have ability to perform prestart checks and clean down procedures.
· Must have qualification or willingness to achieve.
· Ideally you will hold qualifications or have demonstrable experience in sports turf management or a willingness to learn the craft. Ideally have experience in a range of treatments to support optimal playing and growing surfaces.
Herbicide
· Must have PA1, PA6a (You must be competent in calibration although refresher will be given if necessary)
Maintenance of Shrubs / and Hedges
· Must have proven ability to operate a variety of hedge cutters both battery and petrol. Must have experience operating both short and long arm hedge cutters.
· Must have qualification or willingness to achieve.
· Must have proven ability identify shrubs for pruning depending on flowering and sensitivity. Must be capable of pruning shrubs creating open structure and promoting flowering. Must be able to identify Dead, Damage, and Disease. Must follow correct clean down procedures to prevent spread of pathogens.
Woodland Management / Tree work
· Must have experience in basic woodland management such as dragging and stacking timber.
· Must have experience in planting young trees and woodland scrub.
· Must have experience splitting wood with axe and log splitter.
· Must have NPTC 201/ or willingness to achieve
· Must have a understanding of habitat creation and be comfortable supporting biodiversity
· Ideally you will have an interest in woodlands and have a working knowledge of best practice.
Maintenance of flowerbeds
Must have proven experience maintaining flowerbeds this will include;
· Soil preparation, bedding planting, perennial planting
· Growing, deadheading, splitting and supporting perennials
· Planting and maintaining wildflower areas
· Weeding
· Must be able to identify weeds
Internal plant maintenance
· Must have a basic knowledge of indoor plant maintenance including the ability to recognise health issues.
Leaf and Detritus clearing
· Must have proven experience performing leaf clearing and site cleaning such as moss removal and power washing.
Litter picking
· Must have experience in environmental services and or willingness to perform this operation.
Drive and maintain site vehicles
· Must have experience driving site vans and trailers and take an active role in their maintenance and checks
· Must have an aptitude of machinery which includes the use of tractors as machine use is fundamental.
Use and maintain tools equipment
· Must have experience using a variety of hand tools which includes cleaning , maintaining and reporting faults
Record keeping
· Must be willing to fill in basic records as required
Team player
· Must be willing to work in a team environment, foster collaboration and team development
· Willingness to engage the client and provide positive engaging experience
Weekends/ Sociable hours
· Must be prepared to work weekends as lieu or over time. No more that 8 days per year
· Must be prepared to work unsociable hours in emergency situations.
· Flexible with start and finish times such as arriving early and finishing early in summer/winter
Gritting
· Must have experience or willingness to perform gritting operations manually or with machine. This may include working unsociable hours during extreme weather.
Desirable qualifications/experience
- Ideally have experience in sports turf maintenance and regeneration
- Ideally have some woodland management experience
- Ideally have ride on mowing qualification/experience
- Ideally have tree inspection experience/qualifications
- Woodchipper qualifications
- Must be able to identify a range of trees and plants by common names
· Ideally have tractor experience over 3 tonne
· Ideally hold PA2 qualification
