Ships Agent
Rix Cargo Solutions – Montrose
Full Time | Circa £30,000 DOE
Join Rix Cargo Solutions
Rix Cargo Solutions, part of the Rix Group, is looking for a Ships Agent to join our team based in Montrose.
Rix Group is a long-established, family-owned business with a proud maritime heritage dating back to 1873. Today, the Group operates across a diverse range of industries throughout the UK, with shipping and maritime services remaining an important part of our business.
Rix Cargo Solutions works across a wide range of shipping trades, including dry cargo, break bulk and offshore wind, providing a professional and responsive service to vessels, owners, charterers and other stakeholders.
This is a varied, hands-on role where no two days are the same. You'll be responsible for coordinating vessel calls from arrival through to departure, working closely with ports, vessel crews, customers and service providers to make sure everything runs smoothly.
The role is primarily based in Montrose, although there may occasionally be a requirement to service other ports within the region.
The Role
As a Ships Agent, your responsibilities will include:
- Booking vessels to berth or anchor with the relevant Port or Harbour Authority.
- Arranging services required for vessel arrivals and departures, including pilotage, towage and linesmen.
- Coordinating services during a vessel's stay, including fresh water, waste and trash removal, gangways, fenders, cranes and forklifts.
- Arranging husbandry requirements such as emergency medical appointments, ship spares and ship stores.
- Coordinating crew changes, including taxis, hotels and other travel arrangements.
- Liaising with all relevant parties to ensure vessel calls are handled safely, professionally and efficiently.
- Completing and processing required arrival and departure documentation for Port Authorities, UK Border Force, Port Health and other relevant bodies, including CERS, Health Declarations and FAL forms.
- Processing supplier invoices and associated costs to enable final invoices to be raised to clients.
- Providing prospects, cargo updates and sailing updates to all relevant parties.
- Following individual client procedures and requirements.
- Responding to changing operational requirements and resolving issues as they arise.
About You
We're looking for someone who is hardworking, enthusiastic and organised, with a strong eye for detail and the ability to remain calm when priorities change.
You'll need:
- A full UK driving licence.
- Good computer skills, including experience using Microsoft Office.
- Strong communication and organisational skills.
- The ability to work under pressure and prioritise a changing workload.
- A flexible approach to working hours.
- The confidence to communicate with customers, vessel crews, port authorities and suppliers.
- A proactive attitude and willingness to take ownership of tasks.
Previous experience within the shipping, maritime or logistics industry would be advantageous, but isn't essential. Full training will be provided for the right candidate, so we're equally interested in people with the right attitude and transferable skills who are keen to build a career within the shipping industry.
Working Hours & Package
This is a full-time position and, due to the nature of the shipping industry, flexibility is essential.
The role includes regular out-of-hours evening and weekend work on a rota basis, with overtime payments applicable.
The package includes:
- Basic salary circa £30,000, depending on experience
- Overtime payments for additional hours
- Mileage payments where applicable
- Full training and support
- The opportunity to develop your knowledge and career within the shipping and maritime industry
- The benefits of joining an established, family-owned Group with more than 150 years of heritage
If you're looking for a role that's varied, fast-paced and gives you the opportunity to play an important part in vessel operations, we'd love to hear from you.
Pay: £30,000.00 per year
Benefits:
- Cycle to work scheme
- On-site parking
