About the role
Job Title: Planner
Location: Isle of Lewis - Stornoway
Company: Balfour Beatty
Project: ASTI
Build on your site experience and develop your career in planning
Balfour Beatty is looking for a Planner to join our team on the Isle of Lewis, supporting the delivery of the ASTI programme—a major investment in Scotland’s electricity transmission network.
This opportunity is particularly suited to someone who has developed strong practical experience in a site-based construction role and has recently moved, or is looking to move, into project planning.
You may currently be working as a Site Engineer, Section Engineer, Sub Agent, Site Agent or Construction Manager and have gained some experience supporting programmes, producing short-term plans or monitoring progress. Your understanding of how work is delivered on site will allow you to create realistic, practical programmes that support the successful delivery of the project.
Working alongside experienced planning and project professionals, you will develop your technical planning capabilities while contributing valuable construction and site knowledge
What you'll be doing
As a Planner, you will work closely with the wider project team to develop, manage and maintain construction programmes.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Developing and maintaining detailed project programmes in collaboration with the construction, engineering, design, procurement and commercial teams
- Using your site experience to ensure programmes reflect realistic construction sequences, methodologies and resource requirements
- Supporting the production of short-term, medium-term and contract programmes
- Monitoring progress against agreed baselines and identifying potential delays, risks and opportunities
- Reviewing the project’s critical path and communicating findings to the project team
- Gathering progress information from site teams, subcontractors and suppliers
- Producing programme updates, progress reports, presentations and planning information
- Supporting programme change control and maintaining accurate planning records
- Assisting with resource planning across labour, plant, equipment and materials
- Working with project stakeholders to improve coordination and support timely project delivery
- Producing and analysing project data and key performance indicators
- Helping the project team identify appropriate corrective actions where performance differs from the programme
Who we're looking for
We are looking for someone with practical construction experience who has developed an interest in planning
You should have:
- Previous site-based experience within civil engineering, infrastructure, energy or another relevant construction environment
- Recently moved into a planning position, or gained planning responsibilities as part of a site-based role
- A strong understanding of construction methodology, sequencing and site operations
- Experience contributing to construction programmes, short-term plans, progress updates or project reporting
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills
- The ability to interpret project information and communicate it clearly
- Strong organisational and time-management skills
- Confidence working collaboratively with site teams and project stakeholders
- Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- Some experience of, or a willingness to develop your skills in, planning software such as Primavera P6, Asta Powerproject or Microsoft Project
Formal planning experience is valuable, but we are equally interested in candidates who can combine practical site knowledge with the motivation to build a long-term career in project planning.
Why join the ASTI project?
The ASTI programme will play an important role in strengthening Scotland’s electricity transmission network and supporting the transition to a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
Joining the project on the Isle of Lewis will give you the opportunity to:
- Contribute to a nationally significant infrastructure programme
- Apply your practical site experience within a planning environment
- Learn from experienced planners and project professionals
- Develop your knowledge of Primavera P6 or other industry-standard planning systems
- Gain exposure to engineering, construction, procurement, commercial and stakeholder activities
- Build a clear career pathway within planning and project controls
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced construction professional who understands how projects are delivered on site and is ready to take the next step in their planning career.
The responsibilities and candidate requirements have been adapted from the attached Planning role profile, including programme management, critical-path analysis, baseline control, resource planning and the use of P6, Asta or Microsoft Project.
