Job overview

An Ophthalmology Consultant specialising in cornea is responsible for diagnosing and treating complex corneal and anterior segment conditions, performing specialised surgeries including corneal transplants and cataract procedures, and managing outpatient and surgical services. The role also includes leading the ARC service, supporting urgent and emergency eye care pathways, supervising junior staff, and contributing to teaching, research, and service development within the department.

Main duties of the job

Main duties would include diagnosing and managing complex corneal and anterior segment conditions, performing specialised surgical procedures, leading and developing the ARC service, managing outpatient clinics and theatre sessions, supporting urgent and emergency eye care services, supervising and teaching junior medical staff, participating in clinical governance and audit activities, and contributing to service improvement, research, and multidisciplinary team working within the Royal Eye Unit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Diagnose and manage complex corneal and anterior segment disorders.
Perform specialised ophthalmic procedures .
Lead, develop, and oversee the ARC service and associated patient pathways.
Conduct outpatient clinics, theatre sessions, and ward-based care as required.
Supervise, mentor, and teach junior medical staff and multidisciplinary teams.
Participate in audit, clinical governance, quality improvement, and research activities.
Contribute to service development and the delivery of safe, effective patient care.

Person specification

Clinical Experience

Essential criteria

Prior experience of undertaking general and emergency eye care ophthalmology
Management of patients with corneal conditions.
At least one-year corneal Fellowship / ASTO/ TSC
Fully independent to carry out and supervise cataract surgery

Desirable criteria

Prior NHS consultant experience
Experience of carrying out high volume cataract lists

Qualifications

Essential criteria

Full GMC registration with licence to practice
FRCOphth or equivalent
Possession of CCT or CESR in Ophthalmology
On GMC’s Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT from the date of the interview - FRCOphth or equivalent

Desirable criteria

Higher degree (MD,PhD or equivalent)
Diploma or Masters in relevant field
