Black History Research Project - Overview

The MZ Heritage Hub is a project run by Mount Zion Apostolic Church (MZAC) and funded by National Heritage Lottery Fund.

The MZ Heritage Hub will support eight to ten people to carry out research projects in areas of black history in Nottingham that are particularly relevant to MZAC and its community, or where there are gaps in existing knowledge and research.

Examples of projects might include:

· The history of a black-led collective

· The history and heritage of a black-led building

· Black people in cinema

· NG7 characters

The research will inform other aspects of the MZ Heritage Hub’s work such as:

· A commissioned artwork on the side of the MZ building

· Interpretation panels and listening posts inside and outside the MZ building

· Black history resources, including loan boxes for schools

The research projects will be digitised and shared with the public in agreed places and formats.

Purpose of the Role

The research supervisor/facilitator will work with the heritage activity planner to recruit and support eight to ten community researchers and their individual research projects.

The research supervisor/facilitator will be involved in the recruitment of the community researchers and marketing of the opportunity. They will design a programme consisting of group sessions and one-to-one support sessions. The programme will be in person or a mixture of in-person and online sessions. The programme will be designed according to the needs of participants but might include:

· Research methods

· Structuring a report

· Creative reporting methods

· Presenting your research

Peer support will be built into the programme. Guest speakers can also be included.

Community researchers will have the opportunity to present their research as part of the MZ Heritage Hub’s programme of black history talks and events. The programme will support them to prepare for this.

The supervisor/facilitator work with the community researchers and the heritage activity planner to share their research in other ways including publications, radio interviews, and social media. They will work with relevant organisations and teams such as Local Studies (Central Library) and Nottinghamshire Archives to make the research available to the public beyond the life of the project.

The research supervisor/facilitator will also be required to input into the evaluation process, gathering feedback from the community researchers (with tools and methods provided by the project’s external evaluators) and giving their own perspectives on the programme.

Timescale

July 2026 to July 2027.

Community researchers will be given 9 to 12 months to complete their research. They should have interim findings ready for the soft launch for the re-opening of the MZAC building in Spring 2027.

Budget

Fee: £8000 including expenses, any guest speakers and VAT.

(Room hire for group sessions, and community researchers’ travel expenses and refreshments will be covered from a separate volunteer budget.)
