The Vacancy:
Amphenol Military & Aerospace is seeking a motivated and technically skilled Material Process Engineer to join our team in Whitstable.
This is an exciting opportunity for a science or chemistry professional to play a key role in the development, control and continuous improvement of electroplating and metal finishing processes that support products used in some of the world's most demanding aerospace and defence applications.
Working closely with chemical analysts, operators, team leaders and management, you will be responsible for maintaining process control, improving manufacturing performance, supporting new product introduction activities and ensuring compliance with quality, environmental and health & safety standards. You will also contribute to the development of new finishes and technologies while helping to drive operational excellence across the department.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyse, maintain and continuously improve electroplating and metal finishing processes.
- Develop and implement PFMEAs, process diagrams, work instructions and process documentation.
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting expertise across plating operations.
- Investigate process issues, customer returns and non-conformances, implementing corrective and preventative actions.
- Monitor, analyse and control plating chemicals, solutions and materials to ensure consistent process performance.
- Support New Product Introduction (NPI) projects through process development and validation activities.
- Maintain process control limits and oversee routine chemical analysis schedules.
- Develop and maintain quality documentation, analytical procedures and manufacturing instructions.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives, including 5S standards and departmental efficiency projects.
- Support wastewater treatment operations, environmental compliance and hazardous waste management activities.
- Coordinate with maintenance teams to ensure plating plant and equipment remain fully operational.
- Provide training, coaching and mentoring to team members to support skills development and performance improvement.
- Act as deputy for the Material Finish Engineer when required.
What We Are Looking For Essential Skills & Experience
- Degree qualified in Chemistry, Materials Science or a related scientific discipline.
- Experience working within a manufacturing or engineering environment.
- Strong understanding of process control, continuous improvement methodologies and technical problem solving.
- Knowledge of PFMEA development, process documentation and quality management practices.
- Understanding of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and laboratory processes.
- Knowledge of Health & Safety requirements, including COSHH and chemical handling procedures.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data and identify process improvement opportunities.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
Desirable
- Experience within electroplating, surface finishing or chemical process manufacturing.
- Knowledge of wastewater treatment systems and environmental compliance requirements.
- Experience supporting NPI projects within a regulated manufacturing environment.
- Understanding of aerospace, defence or other high-reliability manufacturing sectors.
- Previous experience training, mentoring or leading teams.
