About Us Gower Gallery is a well-loved gallery and lifestyle gift shop in Mumbles, Swansea, home to original art by local and international artists, limited edition prints, ceramics, and gifts — plus our own in-house framing service. We're looking for a confident, sales-driven addition to our team.
The Role We're seeking an enthusiastic team member to join our small gallery and gain valuable experience in the arts sector. This role would suit a recent graduate, though we welcome applications from anyone looking to develop their career in a gallery environment. Please be advised that we are not looking for temporary seasonal staff.
This is initially a minimum of three days per week position, with increased hours during the busy Summer and Christmas periods, and potential for ongoing employment.
As Gallery Assistant, you'll be involved in all aspects of running the gallery and will become the face of Gower Gallery to our visitors. This is an excellent opportunity to develop skills in arts administration, customer service, visual merchandising, and the day-to-day operations of a creative business.
Key Responsibilities
- Welcoming visitors and providing knowledgeable, friendly customer service
- Processing sales and handling till operations
- Taking bespoke framing orders
- Hanging paintings and creating engaging displays
- Maintaining the gallery space to high standards of presentation
- Updating social media platforms
- Building relationships with customers, many of whom are regular visitors
- Liaising with artists and suppliers
Essential Requirements
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Comfortable representing artists and their work with knowledge and enthusiasm
- Confidence to approach browsers and start a conversation, not wait to be asked
- Genuine interest in art and contemporary craft
- Computer literacy and willingness to learn new systems
- Reliable, punctual, and well-presented
- Able to work at least two Saturdays a month and one Sunday
- Eye for visual merchandising and display
- physically strong enough to handle large art work
Desirable Requirements
- Retail or gallery sales experience
- Experience on a market stall or pop-up
- Knowledge of the local area, specifically the coastline of Gower
