About the Role
We are looking for an experienced and highly motivated Site Hygiene Manager to lead all hygiene operations across our food manufacturing site.
This is a critical leadership role responsible for ensuring the highest standards of cleanliness, food safety and hygiene are consistently achieved throughout the production facility. You will lead and develop the hygiene team, ensuring all cleaning activities are completed safely, efficiently and in full compliance with food safety legislation, customer requirements and company standards.
Working closely with Production, Technical, Engineering and Health & Safety teams, you will drive continuous improvement, maintain audit readiness and create a culture where hygiene excellence is everyone's responsibility.
Key Responsibilities Hygiene Management
- Lead, manage and motivate the hygiene team.
- Plan and oversee all daily, weekly and periodic cleaning schedules.
- Ensure all hygiene activities are completed to the required standard and on time.
- Develop and continuously improve hygiene systems and procedures.
- Ensure the factory remains audit-ready at all times.
- Assist the team with cleaning duties in all areas of the site including, warehouse, bakery, laundry, offices & staff areas.
Food Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with:
- HACCP
- SALSA Food Safety Standards
- Food Safety Act
- Environmental Health requirements
- Company hygiene policies and procedures
- Maintain hygiene documentation and records.
- Support internal, customer and external audits.
- Lead corrective actions relating to hygiene non-conformances.
Team Leadership
- Recruit, train and develop hygiene team members.
- Conduct regular one-to-one meetings and performance reviews.
- Create training plans and competency assessments.
- Manage attendance, holidays and staffing levels.
- Promote a positive, high-performing team culture.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve hygiene efficiency.
- Reduce cleaning downtime without compromising standards.
- Introduce improved cleaning methods and equipment where appropriate.
- Monitor hygiene KPIs and drive performance improvements.
- Investigate recurring hygiene issues and implement long-term solutions.
Health & Safety
- Ensure safe systems of work are followed.
- Complete and review COSHH assessments.
- Ensure correct storage and use of cleaning chemicals.
- Promote safe working practices across the hygiene department.
- Report and investigate accidents and near misses.
Cross-Department Collaboration
- Work closely with:

- Support production planning to minimise downtime.
- Assist with factory improvement projects.

Skills & Experience RequiredEssential
- Previous experience managing hygiene within a food manufacturing environment.
- Strong understanding of food safety legislation.
- Knowledge of HACCP principles.
- Experience preparing for and supporting SALSA and/or BRCGS audits.
- Excellent leadership and people management skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong organisational and planning skills.
- High attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills.
- Competent in Microsoft Office.
Desirable
- Level 3 Food Safety qualification.
- HACCP qualification.
- COSHH training.
- IOSH Managing Safely qualification.
- Experience using hygiene verification methods such as ATP testing and environmental swabbing.
- Experience driving continuous improvement initiatives within a food manufacturing environment.
