Full job description

Spencer Quantum Ltd, a member of RSK Group, is a long established multi-disciplinary company with its land management division, and its geotechnical & geoenvironmental contractor and consultant division. We now have a unique opportunity for an Engineering Geologist/ Geotechnical Engineer with at least 3 years relevant industry experience to join our growing Geotechnical Division covering primarily our South West - Exeter based regions, with a strong focus on ground investigation delivery.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting with ground investigation work typically across South West and occasionally South Wales and as and when required. You will also be expected to have experience and ability to undertake geotechnical/ geoenvironmental interpretative ground investigation reports and manage medium to large size GI contracts. All project work must be carried out with due diligence, adhered to by the company procedures & completed within the given cost budgets and time scales agreed. Good communication is required to inform/liaise with other project staff and sometimes the client periodically with updates & any issues raised. More specifically you will be:

Undertaking Phase 1 desk studies
Liaising with clients, engineering supervisors and subcontractors
Setting up and organising ground investigation works
Display sound leadership and have the ability to work independently where required and problem solve
Supervising intrusive investigation activities such as drilling, trial pitting and in-situ testing
Soil and rock logging and laboratory scheduling
Processing & Interpretation of field and laboratory results
Report writing, factual and interpretative report experience required

Person Specification:

BSc degree level qualified in geology/earth sciences or a related geotechnical or geo-environmental subject essential
Previous UK ground investigation site experience is essential, and knowledge of the various techniques employed
MSc in a geotechnical/engineering geology discipline preferable, but not essential
Be able to log samples to BS 5930+A2 technical standards
A good knowledge of the principal soil and rock strata encountered in the UK
Knowledgeable in geotechnical studies including good understanding of basic soil mechanics
Familiar with and be able to interpret geological maps and published geological data
Understanding of water, ground and soil gas monitoring techniques
Understanding of geotechnical in-situ testing e.g. CBR, Plate Bearing, TRL DCP & Soakaway testing
Ability to follow instruction, be self-motivated, exhibit a proactive approach, work well within a team environment and willing to be flexible to work nationally as required
Full UK driving licence essential
Valid CSCS Card (if not held, the Company will facilitate)
Ability to work as a team player with good written and spoken communication skills
Excellent report writing skills with a keen eye for detail and accuracy
Ability to travel to different sites
