Spray Operator
Job Purpose
To protect and maintain the health, quality and productivity of nursery stock through the safe, effective and timely application of plant protection products. The Spray Operator will play a vital role in maintaining crop health, supporting integrated pest management (IPM) programmes and ensuring all spraying activities are carried out safely, accurately and in full compliance with current legislation and company standards.
The role will also support the wider nursery production team throughout the year, contributing to the successful production of over one million trees annually.
Key Responsibilities
- Monitor nursery stock, trees and crops for signs of pests, diseases, weeds and nutritional or physiological disorders.
- Carry out routine crop inspections and report findings promptly to the Production Manager.
- Work alongside management and agronomists to implement Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programmes.
- Prepare, mix and apply plant protection products safely and accurately in accordance with product labels, legislation and company procedures.
- Assess weather conditions before spraying to ensure applications are safe, effective and environmentally responsible.
- Operate and maintain knapsack sprayers, boom sprayers and other application equipment.
- Calibrate spray equipment regularly to ensure accurate application rates.
- Maintain accurate spray records, stock records and treatment logs.
- Monitor the effectiveness of treatments and report any concerns or recommendations.
- Help maintain high standards of nursery hygiene and biosecurity to minimise the spread of pests and diseases.
- Work closely with the wider nursery team to support seasonal production activities when required.
- Follow all company Health & Safety, COSHH, environmental and biosecurity procedures.
- Ensure PPE is used correctly and maintained in good condition.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Previous experience in a horticultural, nursery or agricultural spraying role.
- Good knowledge of horticultural pests, diseases, weeds and crop protection.
- Experience operating pesticide application equipment.
- Good understanding of Integrated Pest Management (IPM).
- Excellent attention to detail and record-keeping skills.
- Ability to work independently and prioritise workloads.
- Flexible approach to work during busy seasonal periods.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
Essential Qualifications
- PA1 – Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides.
- PA2 or PA3 (depending on equipment used).
- PA6A – Hand-Held Applicator.
- Full UK Driving Licence.
Desirable Qualifications
- PA4G or PA4S (granular applicators), if applicable.
- Telehandler certificate.
- Forklift licence.
- Experience operating tractors and other agricultural machinery.
