Landscape Labourer (Sub-Contractor)

Job Summary
This is a sub-contractor position. We provide support with administration and clear terms, but you will be responsible for your own tax. The work is flexible in terms of days and availability, and we simply ask for reasonable notice so we can plan jobs effectively.
Cormorant & Coast is a small, nature-focused landscaping business specialising in wildlife-friendly gardening and biodiversity-led outdoor work across the Rame Peninsula and wider South West. Our projects include garden redesigns, habitat creation, naturalistic planting, and long-term maintenance for private and commercial clients.
We are seeking a practical, reliable and physically capable individual who enjoys outdoor work and is confident undertaking manual tasks. The role involves supporting all aspects of garden and landscape projects, including earth moving, digging, lifting, and regular tool and machinery use.
Main Duties
The role will involve a combination of the following:
Landscaping and physical tasks
- digging, clearing, soil moving and ground preparation
- carrying materials (e.g. soil, gravel, timber, plants, and stone)
- lifting heavy loads (up to 25kg on a regular basis)
- laying topsoil, compost, mulch and aggregates
- building or installing small structural elements (e.g. edging, raised beds)
Tool and machinery operation
- use of hand tools (spades, mattocks, rakes, pruning tools)
- regular use of powered equipment including:
- hedge trimmers
- brush cutters
- lawnmowers
- blowers
- compact saws or drills (after training)
- basic machine maintenance (fuel checks, blade care, etc.)
Planting and horticulture
- planting trees, shrubs and perennials
- preparing beds and borders
- installing naturalistic planting schemes
- green waste handling and site clean-up
Habitat-focused work
- creating habitat features (log piles, ponds, pollinator planting etc.)
- working on projects designed to support biodiversity
Working Conditions
This role requires:
- consistent outdoor work
- working in all weather (rain, cold, heat)
- walking, kneeling, bending, and lifting for long periods
- operating machinery safely
- occasional longer days depending on project schedule
Required Attributes
- physically fit and comfortable with regular manual labour
- confident using tools, or willing to learn
- reliable, self-motivated and practical
- genuine interest in gardens, landscapes and wildlife
- ability to follow instructions and work safely on site
Experience in gardening or landscaping is desirable but not essential; full training can be provided for the right candidate.
A driver’s licence is helpful but not required.
