About the Role:
Glasgow has a strong reputation for engineering, technology and practical innovation, and at Optomatica Automation Solutions Ltd, we bring that same mindset to intelligent automation. We develop reliable systems that help organisations reduce manual work, improve operational accuracy and scale more efficiently.
We are looking for a Principal Automation Engineer who can take technical ownership of complex automation programmes from initial discovery through to production deployment. This is a high level individual contributor position with technical leadership responsibilities, but it is not an executive or department management role.
You will work closely with software engineers, data specialists, solution architects and client stakeholders to design automation systems that are secure, scalable and maintainable. You will also provide technical guidance to other engineers and help establish strong engineering standards across projects.
Why Work With Us?
The Environment:
Our Glasgow office provides a professional and collaborative setting where engineers can focus on solving meaningful technical problems. We support flexible working arrangements depending on project and client requirements.
Technical Ownership:
You will have a strong voice in architecture, platform selection and engineering standards. We value informed technical decisions and practical solutions rather than unnecessary complexity.
Modern Technology:
Our projects may involve Python, C Sharp, APIs, cloud services, workflow platforms, robotic process automation, data integration and artificial intelligence based automation.
Professional Growth:
You will have access to technical training, professional certifications and industry events to support your continued development.
Key Responsibilities:
Automation Architecture:
Design scalable automation solutions that integrate with existing business systems, cloud platforms and third party applications.
End to End Delivery:
Lead the technical delivery process from requirements analysis and solution design through development, testing, deployment and post launch support.
Engineering Standards:
Define and improve coding standards, documentation practices, testing approaches and reusable automation frameworks.
Technical Leadership:
Provide guidance to junior and mid level engineers, conduct technical reviews and support the resolution of complex engineering problems.
Systems Integration:
Develop and oversee integrations using APIs, databases, messaging services and cloud based tools.
Process Assessment:
Evaluate operational processes and identify opportunities where automation can improve efficiency, accuracy and reliability.
Security and Reliability:
Ensure automation solutions meet appropriate standards for security, access control, data protection, monitoring and business continuity.
Stakeholder Collaboration:
Explain technical recommendations clearly to clients, project teams and internal stakeholders. Translate complex requirements into practical technical solutions.
What We Are Looking For:
Experience:
At least 6 years of experience in software engineering, automation engineering, systems integration or a closely related technical field.
Technical Expertise:
Strong experience with Python, C Sharp, JavaScript or another relevant programming language. Experience with APIs, databases, cloud platforms and workflow automation tools is also required.
Automation Knowledge:
Practical experience designing and deploying enterprise automation solutions using robotic process automation, workflow tools, custom software or cloud based services.
Architecture Skills:
Ability to design reliable and scalable systems, assess technical risks and make sound decisions across complex technology environments.
Leadership:
Experience mentoring engineers, reviewing technical work and providing guidance without requiring formal line management responsibility.
Communication:
Strong written and verbal English communication skills. You should be comfortable discussing technical decisions with both engineering teams and non technical stakeholders.
Mindset:
You are analytical, practical and focused on long term maintainability. You understand when to build a custom solution, when to use an existing platform and when a process should not be automated.
Pay: £4,189.00-£5,225.00 per month
Work Location: In person
