Background
The Cost Department at Hugh James conducts some of the largest, most interesting and specialist costs cases within England and Wales. The team works closely with the Claimant teams within the firm while also providing general support for teams throughout the rest of the firm. The team work predominately on estimates, cost budgets, bill preparation, negotiations, mediations and JSMs. They also attend court for detailed assessment and costs and case management hearings.

The role
As part of the team, the successful candidate will –

Prepare complex Bills of Costs, Schedules of Costs and Cost Budgets for high-value personal injury, group action and commercial litigation matters
- Prepare Points of Dispute and Replies
- Negotiate and mediate costs settlements
- Attend detailed assessment hearings and Costs Case Management Hearings
- Provide technical guidance and support to junior members of the team where appropriate
- Support business development initiatives and build strong relationships with internal and external clients
Skills & Qualifications
The successful candidate will have significant experience in a senior law costs role with excellent technical knowledge and proven drafting negotiation and advocacy skills on complex and high value matters. Costs Lawyer/Solicitor qualifications would be advantageous.
They will be confident managing a varied caseload of complex matters independently and will possess excellent communication, organisational and client relationship skills. Experience of using Costsmaster would be advantageous. Excellent IT skills are required.
