Graduate Naval Architect (Technical Compliance)
Cockwells is a global leader in building luxury motor yachts and superyacht tenders.
We’re looking for a full-time Graduate Naval Architect to join our Design team in Cornwall. The role will be split across the Production and Superyacht Tender manufacturing teams. The successful candidate will ensure technical compliance with the Recreational Craft Directive, new UKCA equivalent regulations, and other relevant standards, such as Flag State regulations.
Job description
The successful candidate will:
· Assist with the design of vessels to make sure they are compliant with relevant standards
· Populate the CEProof software package to create Technical Construction Files for third-party assessment (training will be provided).
· Create weight estimate spreadsheets for superyacht tenders and production boats.
· Monitor weight estimates with the build teams, updating regularly with actual weights
· Read technical reports from subcontractors and summarise actions to colleagues
· Work alongside subcontract Naval Architects, providing data for stability and lifting assessments
· Conduct inclining experiments and offset load tests as required for RCD and UKCA compliance
· Conduct lifting tests with third-party surveyors to ensure compliance with weight constraints.
· Organise noise and vibration testing.
· Stay up to date with the relevant marine and industry standards and regulations.
Personal skills and experience
The successful candidate should have the following:
Essential requirements
· A degree (or equivalent) in Naval Architecture or a similar related field
· Proficient use of 3D and 2D CAD, specifically Rhino3D and the Orca add-on
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey technical concepts
· Ability to work in a team and collaborate with other engineers and professionals
· Enthusiasm, self-motivation, high organisational skills and be reliable and adaptable
· Driving licence, and own transport to travel to each of our sites as required
Desirable requirements
· Work experience within the marine industry.
· Structural design experience.
· Research skills.
· Existing knowledge of the RCD
· Desire to further their career and gain Chartered status.
Location
Based at both of our sites as required (South-West Shipyard, Falmouth and at Mylor Bridge).
Salary
Salary is negotiable depending on experience.
