We’re looking for an experienced Property and Casualty Claims Handler to join our Claims Team in Truro. This is a varied and rewarding role where you’ll support our Members when they need us most, helping them navigate claims with care, confidence and clear communication.
You’ll manage a portfolio of property, liability and casualty claims from first notification through to settlement, using your technical claims knowledge to make fair, thoughtful decisions and deliver excellent service throughout.
Working closely with colleagues and trusted external partners, you’ll investigate claims, review cover, assess liability and negotiate settlements, always aiming to achieve fair outcomes for our Members.
You’ll also have the opportunity to share your expertise, provide guidance to colleagues and help us keep improving the way we support our Members.
Please note, this is an office-based position, working from our head office in Truro. Some hybrid working may be available after successful completion of a probationary period.
Brief, preliminary interviews - to shortlist candidates - will take place via telephone on Thursday 17th September. Subsequent in-person interviews will be held at our Truro office on Wednesday 23rd September.
All interview timeslots will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.
Responsibilities will include:
· Providing an outstanding service to Members throughout the claims journey.
· Managing a varied caseload of property, Employers’ Liability, Public Liability and casualty Personal Injury claims from notification through to settlement.
· Reviewing policy cover, assessing indemnity and making clear, fair decisions in line with policy terms.
· Investigating liability, causation and claim value by gathering and reviewing the right information and evidence.
· Negotiating settlements and keeping claims moving while balancing excellent Member service with sensible cost control.
· Working with Members, solicitors, loss adjusters, reinsurers and other third parties to reach positive outcomes.
· Keeping accurate claim records, reserves and updates in line with company procedures and regulatory requirements.
· Spotting recovery opportunities and potential fraud concerns, escalating where needed.
· Acting as a helpful technical point of contact for colleagues and sharing your knowledge across the team.
· Contributing ideas that help us improve our claims processes, standards and ways of working.
Skills and experience required:
· Strong experience handling property and casualty claims, ideally including Employers’ Liability, Public Liability, Motor Personal Injury, credit hire and property claims.
· A good understanding of policy cover, legal procedures and regulatory expectations within claims handling.
· Confident investigation, negotiation and settlement skills, with the ability to assess liability, causation, indemnity and quantum.
· Excellent communication skills, with a calm, clear and professional approach when supporting Members and working with third parties.
· Great attention to detail, sound judgement and the ability to manage a busy caseload while keeping quality high.
· A collaborative, supportive approach and a willingness to share knowledge with colleagues.
· Experience working with solicitors, loss adjusters or other external suppliers.
· A professional insurance qualification, such as DIP CII, or a legal equivalent.
· An understanding of mutuality, or experience in a mutual insurer or rural insurance environment, would be a real advantage.
