Paterson & Cooke (UK) Ltd is seeking a Laboratory Technician to join our Cornwall team.
This is a hands-on technical role supporting laboratory testing for mining and resources projects. The work carried out in our laboratory helps inform engineering design decisions for projects around the world, including mine backfill, tailings and slurry transport systems.
The role would suit someone with laboratory experience who is organised, practical, detail-focused and keen to develop specialist testing skills within an international engineering consultancy.
The work may include the following tasks and responsibilities:
- Receiving, preparing, splitting, tracking, disposing of or returning samples
- Following defined test work methodologies accurately and consistently
- Carrying out laboratory testing to agreed schedules
- Recording, entering and analysing test data
- Preparing test work reports using company templates and standards
- Maintaining accurate laboratory records and operational records
- Supporting the organisation of shipping and deliveries
- Maintaining inventory of laboratory supplies and updating stock as needed
- Supporting the development or improvement of testing procedures
- Providing support for research and development activities
- Contributing to a safe, tidy and well-organised laboratory environmentt
Essential Skills & Experience
We are looking for someone with:
- GCSEs in Maths, English and Science, or equivalent
- A-levels, equivalent vocational laboratory training, or relevant practical laboratory experience
- Previous experience working in a laboratory or technical testing environment
- Competence with Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel
- Good attention to detail and accurate record keeping
- Good time management, self-organisation and planning skills
- Clear written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to follow procedures and work consistently to agreed methods
- A practical, adaptable approach and willingness to learn
- The ability to work independently and contribute as part of a team
- Willingness to travel locally and occasionally internationally, where required
- Applicants must have the right to work in the UK.
Desirable Skills and Experience
The following would be advantageous, but are not essential:
- Experience of geotechnical test work
- Experience in uniaxial or triaxial strength testing
- Experience preparing technical reports
- Experience with COSHH assessments, risk assessments or laboratory health and safety procedures
