An opportunity has arisen for a 10-session Consultant Haematologist with an interest in Myeloid disease to join a well-established haematology service in Wales. This replacement post sits within a consultant team that delivers both sub-speciality myeloid care and general haematology services, with a strong emphasis on multidisciplinary working, service development, education, and research. The successful candidate will contribute to innovative service models that support performance, maintain high-quality patient care and strengthen training and research within the department.
The postholder will take part in specific sub-speciality clinics while also sharing in general haematology outpatient and inpatient responsibilities. The current commitment includes one in seven weeks attending on the haematology ward and consultant responsibility within the haematology on-call rota.
- Provide a consultant-led clinical service in Haematology, including the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of haematological illness.
- Deliver sub-speciality Myeloid care alongside general haematology outpatient and inpatient work.
- Participate in specific sub-speciality clinics as well as broader haematology service delivery.
- responsibility for inpatient attending cover, outpatient reviews and acute haematology input.
- Take part in the 1:7 consultant on-call rota, with prospective cover.
- Provide senior consultant oversight for:
- acute haematology admissions
- Inpatient haematology management
- liaison haematology queries
- Abnormal laboratory results requiring urgent management
- Urgent issues arising within the haematology day unit
- Work closely with consultant colleagues, nursing teams, laboratory teams, pharmacy and wider MDT colleagues to provide safe, effective and high-quality care.
- Contribute to the safe, efficient and effective running of the haematology service in line with operational policies and service plans.
- Participate in risk management, clinical governance and information governance.
- Support service improvement and modernisation, including identifying opportunities to improve pathways and performance
- Maintain GMC licence to practise, participate in annual appraisal and job planning, and undertake ongoing CPD and revalidation.
- Contribute actively to the service and delivery unit planning process.
- Participate in teaching, training, supervision and postgraduate education.
- Support and participate in research and development activities within the department and wider organisation
This post joins a consultant haematology team of 7 existing consultants delivering a broad clinical haematology service across Wales. The service includes significant activity across general haematology, haemato-oncology, blood transfusion, haemostasis and specialist laboratory services. The post is particularly attractive to someone seeking a role that combines Myeloid practice with a broad general haematology remit within a large regional service.
The haematology and laboratory medicine service operates across multiple hospital sites using a hub-and-spoke model, with specialist services distributed across the network. The laboratories are well-equipped, UKAS-accredited and support a wide range of haematology, transfusion and specialist diagnostic work. In 2024, Laboratory Medicine performed over 5.5 million tests, reflecting the scale and breadth of the service.
The successful candidate would be joining a service with access to substantial specialist activity, including:
- A 30-bed joint haematology/oncology ward
- A 4-bed Bone Marrow Transplant unit
- Intensive treatment pathways for:
- adult acute leukaemias
- lymphomas
- myeloma
- high-count CML
- aplastic anaemia immune therapy
- autologous stem cell transplant work
- A role within a wider South Wales Bone Marrow Transplant programme
- A haemophilia / inherited bleeding disorders service linked to the Bleeding Disorder Network of Wales
- Strong multidisciplinary input from CNSs, pharmacists, biomedical scientists and other allied professionals
- Ongoing regional pathology and service integration work across South West and Mid Wales
This role has a clear academic and educational dimension. The successful candidate will be expected to:

- On the GMC Specialist Register as a Clinical Haematologist, eligible for CCT within 6 months of interview and exit exam passed, or
- equivalent specialist registration route/evidence of equivalence for non-UK trained applicants
- Evidence of effective working relationships across multidisciplinary teams and with all levels of staff
- Evidence of working with management and clinical colleagues to improve services
- Evidence of teaching and training of postgraduate/undergraduate clinical staff
- Evidence of initiating, progressing and completing the audit
- Experience in research in Haematology
